Bits & Bites: Things to Do and Chew in Dallas, March 28-30

It’s a serious weekend with some serious brunch options. How can you pass up chicken and waffles or pancakes with bananas and caramel on a Friday morning? You can’t.


The Fort Worth Food + Wine Festival this weekend has plenty of events to intrigue any food enthusiast. With events, such as the Grand Tasting or Sip & Savor, you are bound to satiate your eclectic palette by the end of the weekend. Take a peek at their website to check out all the events offered. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sissy’s Southern Kitchen & Bar is having brunch time. If you’re looking for a true Southern brunch, order the chicken and waffles, chicken abd dumplings, or even the short rib hash with an order of a Bloody Marry or a Grapefruit Julep.

In one of the hippest areas of Dallas, the Dallas Design District Market will be held at Community Beer Co. this Saturday, March 29 from noon to 6 p.m. Enjoy 50+ vendors, food trucks, craft beer, and live music. Live music will be performed by Dark Rooms, George Quartz, and Greg Reichel.

If, for some reason you’re worried about getting hungry this Saturday, make your way to the second annual Main Street Mudbug Bash at the Main Street Garden from noon to 8 p.m. This Cajun celebration will have 3,500 pounds of crawfish waiting to be eaten. With the purchase of a $25 ticket, you get 2-lbs of crawfish, or you can purchase an entry ticket for $10. As if 3,500 pounds of crawfish wasn’t Cajun enough, try live alligators and live music.

Head over to FM Smoke House for their new brunch menu ,offered every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Debuting this weekend is their smoked brisket with poached eggs on buttermilk biscuits and their Hefeweizen Pancakes made with Live Oak Hefeweizen, bananas, and caramel syrup. Also, take a bite into their prime rib chicken fried steak with biscuits and sausage gravy.

From weeding to planting to fence mending, you will have two volunteer options on Saturday, March 29. Both of these options will offer food and lemonade provided by Slow Food Dallas. Both groups will meet at Bolsa Mercado at 7 a.m. for coffee, then ride to either locations.

Option 1: Help Steve Smith and James Jeffers at Eat the Yard, two farming small pieces of land all over Oak Cliff and beyond.

Option 2: Volunteering at Eden Creek Farm near Blooming Grove, TX is your chance to get out of the city. This farm has everything from vegetables, flowers, to Red Wattle Hogs. Don’t forget to bring your working gloves, hat, and a water bottle. Register online.


The 6th annual Bits & Bites Fundraiser, hosted by El Centro College, will take place this Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. This fundraiser is in honor of the El Centro Food & Hospitality Program’s founding father, Professor Emeritus C. Gus Katsigris. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. $45 in advance, $50 at the door
