Farm to Market Report: Weekend of August 3

farmersMarket_02_char11You’d be so proud of me because I tackled three farmers market in a single weekend a couple weeks ago. I meant to mention it last week, but with all that was going on – it slipped my mind. I mainly went out for tamales, but came home with lots of produce, too.

This past weekend, I went to the White Rock Local Market at the Green Spot. My favorite item that we purchased was Stephanie’s Premium Bakery’s Super bar + Protein cookies. Yes, they sound healthy, which they are, but they’re also so soft, crumbly, and sweet. Great for a treat, even better for breakfast with some Greek yogurt. You can probably find them at the Lakeside location this weekend.

Also, Collin County Farmers Market announced on their Facebook page that they are competing in this competition, so vote for your favorite market to help it win!

Coppell Farmers Market:

This market saw 1400 shoppers in only four hours last weekend. Wow! Sounds like this should be your market of choice if you haven’t visited it yet. Need another incentive to go? Well, they are keeping things cool as August comes around this weekend with frozen watermelon, Savory Sorbet with samples, CJ Good Spice with pints of blueberry sage lemonade, chilled cream from Just Pies, and free iced water to keep you hydrated.

Don’t worry, your usual produce will be available, too. Tomato choices include grape, cherry, green zebras (Whaaa? I wish this was an actual animal), and golden nuggets. Also, tomatillos, heritage, and green tomatoes will be offered. Some squash varieties include Rond de Nice, yellow summer, patty pan, and butternut. Plus zucchini like butta with a butta taste, yellow, and eight ball. Coming up for the Coppell Farmers Market on August 24th: Market to Kitchen Chef Series with Hugh Stewart of Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill.

793 S. Coppell Rd.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Dallas Farmers Market:

Tracy Miller from Local is teaching a peachy class this weekend. She will teach guests how to cook with peaches to make both sweet and savory dishes. Doors open at 11 a.m. and class starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Market Resource Center. FYI, this is the second to last class so get on it.

Frisco Farmers Market:

Most of your basic produce will be coming in this time of year like onions, zucchini, squash, and some tomatoes. Cantaloupe, watermelon, and peaches are still coming, too. However, if you want to mix it up, find a recipe that combines onions and peaches like this one for peach, tomato, and sweet onion salsa. Brandy Miles, chairman of the market, gave a couple other ideas like onion peach pizza and onion peach quiche.

6048 Frisco Square Blvd.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

White Rock Lake Farmers Market:

It’s an Everything Market at Lakeside and as the market is called, you can really find ev-er-y-thing. From ginger pear preserves to catnip snakes to duck eggs. Even if you’re looking for clothing, toys, furniture, or space cadet badges, you will be in luck at the market by the lake. I will be going for the salted caramel cookies (mouth is watering). There is so much to choose from this weekend.

St. Michaels Farmers Market:

JJ&B Jellies and Jams brings all their delicious handmade jellies, jams, and fruit butters with one likes fig and walnut jam, pear butter, and peaches and honey jam. They also have savory ones like toasted pecan-pepper and sweet onion jams.

Produce is usual, but with a few extras like cream peas, sugar baby watermelons, and heirloom eggplant. And finally, there’s Just Pie for dessert with their Pillsbury Award winning Berry Custard Pie. Also, Peachy Page has recently introduced peach ice cream made with fresh peaches from their own orchards.

Bear Bait Honey Farm brings varieties of their delicious honey. They have a light regular honey that comes from the hives around this time and before September is here. After September, the honey is darker, but according to Byron Proutt they are equally good. Bear Bait Honey Farms’ owner, Shane Dilbeck, says that the honey is a raw and truly local product that varies in color and taste depending on the season that it’s harvested. Dilbeck is full of facts about the bees, honey, and the process of using natural practices on the hives so visit him for taste of his sweet honey and honey knowledge.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market

I’ve been looking forward to writing about this event at the market since I saw it on the calendar last weekend. It’s a petting zoo! Okay, so it doesn’t have much to do with the bountiful produce and goods at the market, but it could definitely bring some people in (aka me). The petting zoo opens at 9 a.m. to noon with chickens, goats, ducks, and more. The Grand Prairie Waggin’ Wagon mobile animal adoption trailer will also be on site with dogs and cats for adoption for $70 each. Not bad. It’s going to be a wild weekend at the market in Grand Prairie.
