Farm to Market Report: Weekend of July 6

farmersMarket_02_char11New summer goods showing up this weekend (like watermelon, cantaloupe, and okra). Each market seems to be at the peak of their produce, so take advantage of the fresh supply while you can. Hope you all had a great Fourth of July! Celebration Farmers Market:

The market is pretty much the same, but this bill is putting some stress on the market and the legality of certain vendors.

Coppell Farmers Market:

Coppell is experiencing the height of its produce. If you didn’t get enough from my okra post earlier this week, there will be plenty of that vegetable at this market – the red and green varieties. So what else is fresh this weekend? Seasonal fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, plums, strawberries, blueberries, and potentially apricots. Root vegetables will be available, too: sweet and red potatoes, various onion choices, beets, radishes, and turnips. Also, varied beans and peas, corn on the cob, broccoli, kale, and much more. There will be plenty of peppers, tomatoes, and squashes in many sizes, shapes, colors and, types.

Dallas Farmers Market:

Pecan Lodge, located in Shed 2 at the market, was the winner of Taste Test Thursday last week. The summer session classes are coming up soon. The first one is next weekend (July 13) with Abraham Salum.

Frisco Farmers Market:

Since all the good stuff continues to come in, one vendor (La Esperanza Farms) is picking up a second booth to dish out all its goods. Get the squash, tomatoes, onions, okra, and corn now while it’s ripe and naturally sweet.

The market is celebrating Just Pie. Brandy Miles, market founder, says these pies are like nothing she has ever tasted. “The fruit pies are so fresh and sweet, but his meringue pies…I never knew meringue was supposed to taste like that,” Miles said. “I could eat the meringue for a pie all by itself.” Now, if that doesn’t convince you to go and try one, I’m going to believe you are allergic to meringue.

Artisan spotlight: Lola’s handmade quilts. You can order a specialty blanket for the cooler weather from Esther. She also makes beautiful baby blankets and toddler napper sacks.

For the men, Alan Beckley is bringing back his men’s wallet invention. The wallets can fit “twice as many cards without bending” and still find a way to be slim for more comfortable seating when its in your man or dad’s back pocket.

Rockwall Farmers Market:

Nothing out of the ordinary here, but there are a few vendors to highlight. The organic berry farm will be there with blueberries. You can find East Texas watermelons and gourmet dog treats for your pups from Two Paws Up Bakery.

St. Michaels Farmers Market:

There will be 32 vendors and a new one in particular: Salsa in a Snap. They have instant salsa seasoning. Many of the vendors are returning and you can find out which ones in my post from last week. Highlights: there are a couple new sweet vendors like Texas Toffee and EMA Baking Company and produce like watermelon and purple hull peas. If you’re looking for meat, this market is your solution. They will have chicken sausage, chicken breasts, steaks, roasts, and pork chops.

Oak Lawn United Methodist Church (OLUMC) Farmers Market

If, for some reason, you missed out on the holiday barbecue feast, Mr. BBQ Express will be back at OLUMC with all kinds of specials. Might as well carry out the celebration throughout the weekend.

White Rock Local Market

After no market last weekend because of the extra Saturday last month, it’s an everything market at Lakeside. They are welcoming back all of the favorite vendors with lots of seasonal produce. Demases Farms will join with some tasty cantaloupe.

Downtown Arlington Farmers Market

Bonterra Wine from California is offering a wine sampling/tasting at the market on both Friday and Saturday. In the spirit of the fourth, there will be red, white, and blue beach balls and glow bracelets to hand out plus leftover hula hoops. Yay giveaways. You’d be set for a Fourth of July rave party with those prizes.

Cowtown Farmers Market

The market will take place at usual, but it’s the first Saturday of the month meaning Ball Jars Canning will present its canning demo from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Learn how to make salsa, jam, and pickles, and how to can them at home. There will also be other free demos, door prizes, goody bags, and samples.

Also if you get there early, the food truck Smokin’ Sarah’s is serving breakfast and take-home lunch and dinner. She will have breakfast burritos, coffee, barbeque, salads, and more that are all made with market ingredients.

Grapevine Farmers Market:

The market is open today for the fourth and there are few items in the spotlight. Pecos cantaloupes, Colleyville honey, and bread and butter pickles are the stars of this weekend. There’s even a recipe so you can put those cantaloupe to use.

Cantaloupe Cupcakes

Cupcake Ingredients
16 ounces full-fat cottage cheese
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons whole milk
4 ounces cantaloupe, pureed
2 large eggs
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup semolina flour
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon baking powder

Frosting Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
3 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 tablespoons very finely chopped cantaloupe
Cantaloupe balls for topping cupcakes

Cupcake Directions
Preheat oven to 350 F. In a medium-sized bowl, mix cottage cheese, sugar, milk, cantaloupe, and eggs. Note: Even when you are done mixing, you will still see cottage cheese bits in the liquid. Mix in melted butter, semolina flour, all-purpose flour, vanilla, and baking powder. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full. Bake minis for 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out dry. Standard-sized cupcakes will take about 20 minutes.

Frosting Directions
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, beat butter for 3 minutes on high speed. Add powdered sugar a little bit at a time until fully combined. Mix in vanilla and cantaloupe. Pipe or spread on cooled cupcakes. Just before serving, top cupcakes with cantaloupe balls.
