Bits & Bites: Things to Do and Chew in Dallas This Weekend, June 14
Among the numerous brunches, lunches, and dinners for dads this weekend (check out our list of places to take your pops if you haven’t already), here’s a bunch of other activities your dad might enjoy. Treat him to something nice; after all, you owe half your genetic material to him.
Friday
The Original Pancake House in Plano is showing off its newly decorated and updated look with a ribbon cutting ceremony and summer pancake party. The ceremony starts at 9:15 a.m. and is followed by lots of fun activities at 10 a.m. Build up an appetite and participate in the pancake-eating contest, or fill up on the complimentary breakfast buffet. There will also be a DJ, face painting, balloon twisting, a photo booth, and something to brighten up your year: a chance to win free pancakes for 365 days straight.
U.S. Food Trucks is opening a new park in Dallas (2500 West Mockingbird Ln) specifically for food trucks. The up-and-coming park – Fly-By Food Park – will host a preview from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow night. Entrance is free and the park will feature various gourmet food trucks each weekend. Some of the regulars include: Eat Jo Dawgs, Little Greek, Tutta’s Pizza, Oink and Moo, Parrot Icce, Crazy Pig, Enticed, The Butcher’s Son, and The Lab of The Streets. Get ready for beer, wine, and entertainment, too.
Saturday
Upgrade your beer knowledge at Community Beer Company’s “Beer School.” The $25 class includes samples, tasting techniques, history, and a private tour. The class lasts from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a tour from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are still available.
The Flying Saucer on the Lake’s 4th annual BeerFeast 2013 will feature over 25 breweries and 50 craft beers from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Very rare and limited-release beers will also be there, but they will be tapped individually throughout the day. Along with the returning food trucks, there will be a new addition: live music by Fish Fry Bingo. Tickets are $30 and $40 at the door. These tickets provide admission, a 2013 BeerFeast tasting glass, and a tasting card good for 12 samples. Let dad splurge and buy designated driver tickets for $15. It will give you admission and complimentary soft drinks, but you still have to be 21 or older.
Lakewood Brewing Company will also have a tour this weekend starting at 1:30 p.m. for $10. The tour includes a souvenir glass to keep and use throughout the tour, four free beer samples, and live music. A food truck will be there, but it isn’t included in the tour. The brewery is open to the public form 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Sunday
FREE Father’s Day Beer Tasting at Jack Mac’s Swill and Grill from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (19009 Preston Rd). The preview features Dead Cowboy Brewing’s Double Dead IPA and Grapefruit Wheat.
Roots Juices is celebrating its first year from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Lounge 31. After all the beer stuff from Saturday, refreshing cocktails sound pretty good right now.
The Twenty at the Tower pop-up restaurant is hosting its 5th dinner of the 20 scheduled during June and July. The dinner benefits the Fort Worth Food and Wine Festival, and a mystery Dallas chef will be serving up an intimate dinner for 50 diners for $75. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Marley Dablo is a D Magazine intern. She will be an online journalism senior at the University of Oklahoma in the fall. She plans to attend culinary school upon graduation in hopes of combining her writing and culinary skills to ultimately have her own cooking show one day.
