If you are still in need of a gift for Mom here are some fun ideas. In addition to a nice brunch or dinner out, toasting her with any of the below are sure to please your mom on her day. Though a few are available online only, having it arrive a few days late is worth it as each item below are as special as she is. I talked about a few of these this morning on D: The Broadcast. A few selections below were sent for editorial consideration.
When I think California Chardonnay Jordan easily comes to mind as one of the best, and always rich, layered, classic. From their estate fruit grown in Sonoma County, filled with green apple, tropical fruit and toasted cream. Always memorable and consistently delicious, any Chardonnay loving mom will be pleased with this bottle from Jordan, and a great deal at Spec’s for $27.88 a bottle.Soave is a wine that is much like a Chardonnay with a bit of Sauvignon Blanc mixed in and Scaia Bianca is a gorgeous Italian blend from the Veneto of 50% Garganega, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Trebbiano Soave. Filled with light stone fruit, predominantly ripe, white peaches, with white flower and herbal notes this luscious wine is delicate and delightful, and a bargain at around $11 a bottle, available at Pogo’s.
As Gatsby opens this weekend, give mom a chance to toast with the film’s signature sparkler, elevated a bit. The film showcases their Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial, take this up a level by giving mom a bottle of their just released Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Reserve 2004 Champagne. Only made in very special years, blending all three Champagne grapes, aged at least 7 years on the lees before bottling, another 6 months in bottle to create a lively, luscious citrus with toasted brioche Champagne with vanilla cream and spice notes. $70 at Sigel’s locations throughout Dallas.
Frank Family Blanc de Blanc shows why Chardonnay is such an ideal variety for sparkling wine. Created from 100% of the grape, grown in vines located throughout Napa Valley and produced in very limited amounts at their St. Helena winery, paying homage to their home that was a sparkling wine producer in Napa Valley for years before prohibition. Though their sparkling wines aren’t the first to come to mind when we think Frank Family, thinking more of their rich Chardonnay or robust Cabernet, their sparklers are fresh, distinct and delicious. $45 a bottle, online via their website only.
David Family Anderson Valley Pinot Noir – Bold, decadent and daring is the moto of this special, small production winery named after owner Michelle Reeves Australian father who also lives by that philosophy. The winery only makes Pinot Noir, and make it to the best of their ability, right now producing one from Sonoma’s Alexander Valley as well as Santa Lucia Highlands in the Central Coast. Adding a layer of luxury and sophistication, all labels are created from soft leather, matching the elegant juice in the bottler. Understanding the importance of giving back, a portion of the sale of every bottle goes to Habitat for Humanity of San Francisco. All bottles and cases are numbered so you can visit their website to see the family you are helping through your purchase. Great wine for a great cause – a win win, especially when celebrating mom. $90 a bottle, online via their website only.
Now is the time to sip Rose. As temperatures heat up and sunshine filled days linger long into the night an ideal summertime wine for Mom or anyone is a Rose and one of my favorite comes from Stoller Family Estate in Willamette Valley. Made from their gorgeous Dundee Hill fruit this Rose is filled with layers of crisp citrus – ruby red grapefruit and orange in particular, married with juicy, ripe strawberry and raspberry flavors. They just bottled in March and it is available now via their website for about $20 a bottle, but it won’t last long…unfortunately it never does…as only 500 cases are made each year.
If your mom is like my mom, more of a spirits lover, there are some fun, new flavors to consider. If your mom is a gin drinker, or likes a spirit filled with fresh, herbal and botanical notes consider one of the floral and herb filled bottles from Anchor Distilling Company, one of my favorite spirits creators born out of the old Anchor Steam Brewery in San Francisco dedicated to tradition in creating unique, artisan spirits in small batch, copper stills . They have two that are gorgeous, herbal and fresh, Junipero Gin and Genevieve Gin. Created in the late 1990’s, but still developing a fan base, the Junipero is a bit more of a traditional gin, heavy on the juniper and herbs; the Genevieve is essentially an un-aged whiskey filled with herbal, botanical notes, both fantastic simply mixed with tonic or as the star of classic cocktails like a Vesper martini or a French 75. $29.99 at Total Wine and More.
If Mom likes both wine and spirits, Skyy Vodka recently launched their latest infused vodka, Skyy Infusions Moscato Grape Vodka. 4 times distilled, and gluten free, Skyy Vodka infused with sweet and juicy Moscato wine, perfect for the mom who likes both her wine and her cocktails. The recent rise of Moscato popularity, especially when it is mixed into cocktails, led the company to create an infusion filled with the floral, fresh and fruity flavors of the Moscato grape with their clean vodka. The Moscato Grape Vodka is the latest in a long line of infused vodkas from the company, which also makes a Skyy Infusions Ginger, Raspberry and Coconut, to name a few. $22 at Spec’s locations throughout Dallas.
If mom loves wine gadgets, this one is a must have. I love it! There is another product on the market similar to the CHILL Pouring spout from Host Studios, however the other gadget drips and melts on to your table each time you remove it from the bottle it is chilling. Host Studios, the Seattle based company that brought us the “TWIST” late last year, has now created the “CHILL” pouring spout. Freeze the gadget for 15-20 minutes before use, to ensure it is nice and cold, then insert it into your favorite bottle of wine – either white or red, as sometimes reds need a little bit of a chill down especially with our normal room temperatures here in Texas, then pour out of the convenient spout on top. A no mess solution to keeping your bottle chilled. – $18.99, available online via their website.
