Upcoming Opportunities To Taste

By Hayley Hamilton Cogill |

Lots of opportunities for the wine lover to get out and about around town to sip and savor, here are a few that look especially tasty.

AirStream_27This Friday and Sunday Veuve Clicquot Champagne rolls into town with their decked out Clicquot Airbus for a bubbly celebration  of spring at Saint Ann on Friday from 3pm-8pm and Hotel Za Za on Sunday from noon-6pm with a sparkling pool party.  The Airbus is rolling through the country bringing Champagne wishes to guests coast to coast raising flutes of Yellow Label Veuve at each stop along the way.  Both events are open to the public with flutes available for sale throughout the days.

Tuesday night at Sambuca in Uptown hosts a wine happy hour tasting of 6 wines for $25 with snacks starting at 6:30pm.

Nancy mentioned the April 18 dinner at Tei-An with Coquerel Family Wines the other day….and I would highly recommend adding this to your list.  Incredible wines from our own Brenda and Clay Cockerell paired with innovative dishes from Teach.

April 22 Barlow Vineyards pairs with The 2nd Floor Restaurant for a four course wine focused pairing dinner featuring Co-Owner Barr Smith of the winery.  Barlow is known for their intense, concentrated and elegant Napa Valley reds produced from their estate vineyards on the Silverado Trail.  $95, reservations required – 972-450-2978

April 25 one of my favorite wineries comes to town for an incredible dinner at Hibiscus, Frank Family Vineyards with Scott Lloyd, assistant winemaker.  They with team for a five course pairing dinner….I hope they bring a few of their limited release, delicious sparkling wines.  Luckily, whatever they bring is guaranteed to be good as Frank Family produces some of the most consistently tasty wines in Napa.  $125, reservations required – 214-827-2927.

central marketApril 24 Central Market begins their Passport event for 2013 – this year taking you to Brazil.  Brazil is in the air with both the Olympics and World Cup featured in the country and Central Market will get you prepped for the celebrations with food, wine and beers from around the country.  I had a chance to attend a Brazilian wine tasting at Central Market the other day as their guest tasting some of the wines that will be featured during their Passport Week.  It was my first real introduction to Brazilian wine and I have to say, overall I was pleased.  The country is really beefing up with export (mainly because it is too expensive to drink their wine themselves….wines produced in Brazil are taxed 65% on every bottle where imported wine is only taxed 35%…so they are sending their hearty, bold and yet balanced wines to us instead.)  They were influenced early on by Italian immigrants starting a new life in Brazil, as well as classic French flavors planting the grapes that make Champagne and Asti as well as an abundance of Merlot early on throughout the country.  Today Chardonnay and Pinot Noir or Moscato based sparkling wine and Old World style Merlot are the wines the country is best known for.  A few to look for during the celebration – 2011 Miolo Cuvee Tradition Brut Rose, NV Casa Valduga”130″ Brut, 2006 Lidio Carraro Grande Vindima ‘Quorum’ Corte (or blend) and 2011 Lidio Carraro ‘Angus’ Merlot.

In the mood for Brazilian cocktails instead? Fogo de Chao just introduced a handful of Brazilian inspired cocktails that are sure to bring Carnival to Dallas including a Peruvian Sunset Martini, a Superfruit Lemonade and a Classic Caipirinha.
