December 10 Food Truck News and Schedule in Dallas/Ft. Worth

|

Events around food trucks and trailers are slowing down as the temperature drops. Hopefully, the food trucks have been storing their nuts, as they should expect their revenue to drop 50% to 75% with the colder temps.

The Wednesday and Friday pop-up events at Sigels/Greenville will continue to take place.

The Thursday Gourmet Eatz at Preston/Beltline is dead after complaints from nearby bricks’n’mortar operations.

Saturday evening, several trucks will be in Frisco for a “Christmas in the Square” event. Several food trucks will be at Addison’s Vitruvian Square.

One of Denton’s long time food trucks, The Angry Friar, reported on it’s Facebook page that it is shutting up operations.

Here is your schedule for the week. Especially with risk of ice, always check Facebook and Twitter feeds. Jump for it.

Always Eat at the BarContent CardThere are times when you should actually not eat at the bar—a romantic anniversary date, say, or a meal with six people—but those times are, like, 4 percent of the total times. For the other 96 percent of times, you should sit at the bar.Always. When you are flying solo for lunch: eat at the bar. When you are meeting your bestie for brunch: eat at the bar. For a weeknight date with your spouse or an après-golf bite with your child, whether you’re eating at CraftWay Kitchen or Al Biernat’s, the bar is always the best way to go.

Bartenders are better and faster. They know how to foster camaraderie. You’ll never make a new friend at a table. And if you want to revel in aloneness, that state is only heightened by sitting silently next to a stranger.

You know who eats at the bar? Divorcé(e)s and business travelers. If that sounds like a bad thing, then by all means, eat at a table. Or just do takeout.

Casked and AnsweredContent CardEverything you need to know about natural wine.Q. What does “natural wine” mean, anyway?

A. It’s a big, shaggy category of wines, because the term is not regulated. But the natural wine movement started as a backlash against mass-produced grocery-store wines, which are industrial products designed to conform to specific flavor profiles. Many mass-market wines use artificial ingredients, additives, and fancy tech. Natural wine producers are more like the grape-stomping myth of old. They let the grapes decide what they’ll taste like, with minimal intervention. This year’s vintage might be totally different from last year’s.

Q. I’ve heard that natural wines are funky and weird and gross. Is that true?

A. If you’re used to an engineered fruit bomb of a wine, the flavors and aromas of unfiltered organic grapes can come as a pleasant surprise. But if a natural wine tastes weird and gross, it might just be a bad wine.

Q. Is this a hippie thing?

A. Sort of. But the wines often taste lighter and brighter, pair well with food, and come in vivid colors. They’re frequently lower in alcohol. Plus, natural wine fans report fewer headaches and other side effects.

Don't Bring Your Kids to the BarContent CardBars used to be safe havens for adults. All bars—dives, pubs, taverns, saloons, cocktail dens. Big, small, pricy, or plebeian, any time of day or night. Didn’t matter. You walked through the door and you knew you would be among fellow grownups. No minding your language. No having to power through whining or crying or any adjacent sound. No rescuing some knee-high daredevil who wandered away from his parent’s watch and is about to knock a pint glass onto his pint-size head. But now you can’t be so sure you won’t encounter someone still using a sippy cup.As some of us get older, we go out less, or at least we go out earlier. We shouldn’t have to cede territory. Maybe we’re having A Day at work and ask a friend to meet us for a happy-hour drink to help shake it off. Maybe we just need a moment to decompress, to ease the transition from office to home. Maybe mind your business.

Point is, having an adult beverage is an adult matter and it requires an adults-only environment. You can’t get a sitter? Sorry, we’ll see you next time. Bring your kid to brunch. We prefer breakfast anyway.

The Nastiest Shot in DallasContent CardJeppson’s Malört is a liqueur made in Chicago. Their sales honchos confirm that no place in town sells more of it than Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House, which is entirely the fault of bar manager Carlos Bell. He sells the stuff hard. Here’s a conversation we overhead between Bell and an uninitiated imbiber:BELL: “It tastes like you’re standing at the front of the classroom in fifth grade, eating a pencil. First, the sweet oak hits. That’s the yellow paint and the wood of the pencil. Then a bitter graphite slides in, followed by a grapefruit note that grabs you—but not the flesh or the rind. It’s the white, bitter, fibrous pith. And finally a super dry flavor with a hint of bile assaults your mouth. That’s the eraser and metal binder. And where Campari has that dry finish that leaves your palate, Malört lingers too long.”

NEWBIE: “Why would I want to drink something so terrible?”

BELL: “Have you ever stubbed your toe? To truly appreciate not stubbing your toe, you first have to stub your toe.”
