What To Drink Now: Rum Day

Yep, it is another day not have to have an excuse to hit happy hour in honor of a spirit, today is National Rum Day.  Just like National Tequila Day or National Pina Colada Day, the celebration of an international spirit is all you need to enjoy your favorite libation with some interesting recipes to make the day complete.

In honor of National Rum Day here are a few ideas to create with the ever popular sugar cane based spirit that will transport you to the islands instantly.

Mount Gay Rum introduced a new limited edition bottle earlier this summer, just in time for Rum Day.  The collectible Nautical G Limited Edition Mount Gay Rum commemorates and celebrates the sailing tradition and influence within the brand.

Nautical Golden Coco
2 oz Mount Gay Rum Eclipse Nautical “G” Limited Edition
4 oz coconut water
1/2 oz fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice
Directions – Pour Mount Gay Rum over ice in a tumbler glass.  Top with coconut water and pink grapefruit juice to taste.  Stir and serve.

Ginger Daiquiri

1.5 oz Flor de Caña 7 yr Grand Reserve Rum
.5 oz ginger puree
.75 oz fresh lime juice
.5 oz simple syrup
Directions – Combine ingredients and shake well with ice.  Strain into cocktail glass.  Garnish with lemon twist.

The Conqueror

1.75 oz Ron Abuelo 12 Años
.5 oz Pierre Ferrand Cognac Ambre
.5 oz Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge
.75 oz honey syrup
.5 oz fresh lemon juice
Directions – Put all ingredients into shaker tin and shake vigorously to make sure the liquid is very cold. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a lemon peel.

Funky Pyrat
1.5 oz. Pyrat XO Rum
.25 oz. apricot brandy
Dash of Herbsaint
2 oz. fresh sweet and sour
Splash of grenadine syrup
Directions – Shake all ingredients together with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain over ice into a high ball glass.  Garnish with an orange twist and sprig of fresh mint.

Captain Morgan Black & Honey
1.25 oz. Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum
.75 oz. fresh lemon juice
.5 oz. honey
1 lemon wedge
Directions- Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold. Strain into a rocks glass and garnish with a lemon wedge.

Or, just pour a Brugal 1888, the distinct aged rum from the Dominican Republic, into a rocks glass with a few cubes of ice.  Simple and refined, with spiced caramel and fresh orange flavors and a smooth palate.
