Happy Birthday Cafe Pacific

Yesterday Café Pacific turned 32-years old. But, according to owner Jack “Knucklehead” Knox, the storied restaurant’s real birthday is today. He says:

It has been thirty two years since we quietly unlocked the front door to Cafe Pacific for what we hoped would be an unannounced soft opening. Nothing worked. The servers couldn’t serve, the bartenders couldn’t tend, the cooks couldn’t cook, and the owner was unqualified to own. I saw no advantage to our staying open longer so that we would have more time to offend the maximum number of first time customers. We closed at seven. We opened again twenty fours hours later to only slightly better results.

He sends the original dinner menu below.

  • In the archives of our dining room library we have several pictures of a young Jack Knox, Mel Hollen, Harold Wise, Chef Andrew, Travis Henderson and Jim “before he was Sevy” Severson. Plus many others who worked there in the early-mid 1980’s. Good times. No. Great times.

OMG, what a fabulous place then. The Cheese Bread alone was worth the trip. Somewhere, somehow, they have totally lost the way. It is just not what it used to be and, sadly, they don’t seem to know or care. Today, although a great place to go and “see”, it is a HUGE joke. It either needs a new owner or a new concept. This one is a total, useless disaster.

  • Congratulations to Jack Knox! … But I have a question. When I saw Mel Hollen’s name above, it made me think of Atlantic Cafe … and now I can’t remember which came first Atlantic Cafe or Cafe Pacific. Does anyone remember?

Cafe Pacific was first then Hollen split to do the copycat Atlantic Cafe.

I’m sorry but I missed the first 15 years of Cafe Pacific and I wish I could have experienced it but I am still very happy about it NOW….I love almost everything about it..what am I missing ?These comments seem like a very backhanded slap to an otherwise very consistent dining and food experience and I have always had a very excellent one there.Congrats !

I haven’t been there in years and I remember loving it. Is Shrimp Louis still on the menu? Where else in Dallas can you find a good Shrimp Louis?
