Farm to Market Report: Labor Day Weekend

I miss Erin Ahlfinger. She is much better at compiling these posts than I am, so I’m sorry to all of you who’ve been spoiled by Erin for the last few months or so by her detailed reports and interesting produce facts. Oy vey. At least fall is coming soon, which means nobody has an excuse not to go outside and shop.

Celebration Farmers Market: In a Pickle will be at the market this weekend, celebrating its love for all things zangy. Holleman Farms will also be selling its regular roundup of pastured beef, chicken, and eggs here, while Mother Shuckers is going to sell wholesome homemade tamales. Get your cheese from the Mozzarella Co. stand that’ll be here for all your cheesy needs.

Coppell Farmers Market: Watermelon and cantaloupe are in season now, but peaches are only going to be around for a few more weeks, so start hoarding those peaches while you still can! Grapevine Grains says it’ll have a hatch chile granola this weekend and bring back the Texas pecan granola for the fall. Director Amanda Vanhoozier also wants you guys to know this bit: “We are also celebrating our first full year of accepting SNAP benefits through the Lone Star Cards.  Market tokens can be used at any vendors for food items and food producing plants.  We are encouraging healthy eating habits through a ‘return to the market’ coupon.”

Cowtown Farmers Market:: The seasonal markets (Near Southside, Richland Hills, South Fort Worth and Wednesday Westside markets) are closed, but two markets still remain open. The ones on Southwest Blvd. and Federal Plaza Park are still operating. With cooler weather coming, this means fall field tomatoes, lettuces, winter squash, greens, sweet potatoes, carrots and other root crops are bound to show up at the market soon.

Frisco Farmers Market:: There are only eight Saturdays left at the market! That means you better get as many fresh produce from your local farmers, like La Esperanza Farm and Truth Hill Farm, while you still can.

Grapevine Farmers Market: Jack says it’s going to be a hatch chile fest this weekend. Almost all the vendors will do something with hatch chiles. Mary B Cakes is offering a hatch chili and cheese cornbread, and another vendor is selling hatch chile beef jerky. Out in the middle of somewhere, Jack says they’ll be tumble-roasting hatch chiles so people can buy them roasted by the bushel. Eat them right away or save them in your freezer, if you’re one of those people who likes to do that sort of thing…

Don’t forget to pick up your blackberries and cantaloupes here this weekend. The cantaloupes come from Pecos, TX.

    Last week, I went to Celebration Market and St. Michael’s. Jerry from Joy Farm (at Celebration) had these crazy-huge okra that were short, but as big around as silver dollar. You would have to cut it in pickle-like slices. I thought “you can pickle and fry okra. you can fry pickles. These would make perfect fried okra pickles dipped in ranch”. I dip fried okra in ranch anyway. Perhaps Travis could do some Texas-shaped pickled okra fritters for “Look What I Made”. Just kidding. That’s a terrible idea.

    St. Michael’s has a new weekly pickle, jam, and salsa vendor that has everything from pickled beet relish, to cinnamon pickles, to jalapeno pomegranate jam, to spaghetti sauce. The best part is they have tiny dishes out of every single one to sample and an assortment of chips and crackers to try it on. Sure takes the guess work out of jalapeno jelly – which is often much sweeter than it is spicy. Booo. But yay for samples.
