    Eight of my DGirlfriends and I had our annual Christmas dinner at Bistro 31. It was excellent. Most of us ordered the Lemon Sole which is divine, several had the Halibut special which was also excellent. One girl, apparently not worried about the carbs, had pasta. Everyone loved their dinners – everyone knows good food when they taste ir. LeBrenner gave the restaurant 2 stars – I just don’t get it. The food is consistently good, service has very much smoothed out and is very responsive and it’s a much better dining experience than she gave it credit for. And, no, it’s not dumbed down for for the “Highland Park palate,” which is what some people say. Chef Eric Brandt has been cooking for some of the area’s best chefs for a long time. He’s not going to dumb down anything. I’m sure Alberto and Eric know what will sell. If you want sea urchin or foie gras, go somewhere else. Good lamb, fish, past, pork – Bistro 31 gets it all right.

    Three wonderful restaurants deserve a shout out this week.

    The Free Man served great cajun with loud music in a bare brick wall deep ellum setting.

    The menu at Trinity Hall pub is surprisingly extensive and well executed. The pot roast was appreciated Sunday night comfort food.

    Following Twinwillow’s typically astute recommendation we tried Mughlai. I agree — this is the best Indian I’ve had in Dallas, and is almost among the best Indian i’ve had globally. If you think you don’t like Indian food (like i used to) it may be because you haven’t had good Indian food. Either way, you should try this gem.

    Holy Grail Pub in Plano near Stonebriar. A favorite of ours. Had the roasted pepper sandwich, which was tasty but not a winning replacement to my usual brisket melt. The wife’s steak frites was perfect as always. Of course, the real stars were the $3 Texas drafts for happy hour. Lots of good options – love the Franconia Dunkel – but I stuck to my favorite: good ‘ol Shiner Bock (which is $3 all the time, so no happy hour savings for me).

    Only downside to the night is that they were hosting a beer dinner which took up all but a couple tables next to the door. My heart was already set on drinking like four Shiners, so we ended up at the bar. At least it was comfortable.

    One of the better pubs for eating, and a sure bet for drinking if you’re up that way.

    Lunch at The Ranch in Las Colinas this week. Had the gulf shrimp po boy. It was awesome. Have not had a bad meal there. Great place.

    Actually, Bistro 31 does have foie gras , DGirl, – with figs. It’s great. And there’s a bresaola with cantelope and arugula which is quite good.

    Thanks for the compliment, Tr. Thursday we traded our usual Thursday lunch at First Chinese BBQ for the weekday buffet at Mughlai. Sad to see the place was not very busy at 1:00PM. It seems evenings and weekends are their strongest days. But, the food was fresh and again, very tasty!

    Friday lunch at Salvadorian Cuisine on Arapaho in Richardson.
    Simply put, don’t bother. The Pupusas were pretty good although, very greasy. Everything else was meh.

    Went to Noodle Wave in Richardson twice for lunch – excellent! I love that place. Meso Maya for dinner — never disappoints. The food, drinks and service are always spot on.
