Cavalli in McKinney’s One-Year Anniversary Dinner. If you enjoy Cavalli’s Verace Pizza Napoletana Association-certified pies, toast to their longevity with a five-course meal with Italian wine pairings.
Cooking Class at Duo. Jason Czaja, chef de cuisine at Shinsei, will unravel the mysteries of Asian fusion cuisine. This series will be a four-parter, so stay tuned for more classes to build on your knowledge.

DiningDallas at Malai Kitchen. We here at D quite enjoy Malai Kitchen. We’ve been the West Village restaurant for business lunch, we’ve been there for happy hour cocktails, and we’ve been there for dinner. Now you can go there for a good cause. DiningDallas is a social networking organization dedicated to raising funds for the A.L.S. Association. A.L.S., better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatally degenerative disease that affects the neurons of the brain. Donate five bucks and enjoy drink specials and complimentary hors d’oeuvres like chicken satay, imperial rolls, and the Laotian beef. I highly recommend reading this excellent New York Times opinion piece, “The Good Short Life,” for insight into living with a neurodegenerative disease. In Dudley Clendinen’s case, it happens to be Lou Gehrig’s. But it is moving for anyone personally affected by the myriad other diseases that force the mind to betray the self— Parkinsons, Lewy Body Dementia, Alzheimer’s.

Cooking class at Duo. Date night alert. Couples get to cook and enjoy a whole three-course meal with wine pairings, with the added bonus of learning recipes for future romantic evenings at home.
Friday (9/30)
The State Fair of Texas opens, and our cholesterol levels collectively jump at least 10 points. Fried food highlights this year include fried bubble gum, a so-called “walking taco,” which is really just Dorito pie mixed inside a Dorito bag, and buffalo chicken in a flapjack. You can see all the new heart attack-causing recruits here.
The Crescent Fall Celebration. Technically, this is a benefit gala benefiting the AT&T Performing Arts Center. But it’s also a chance to see a few of Dallas’ culinary giants leave big honking craters in the Earth with their cooking skills. And I’m done with that metaphor. Matt Raso of Nobu, Keith Hanks of Capital Grille, and Juan Rosado of the Rosewood Crescent Hotel, to name just a few, are cooking.
Saturday (10/1)
Lake Highlands Oktoberfest. Oh boy, an Oktoberfest actually in October. Admission is free, with food and drink for purchase (well, you buy the tickets, and then use the tickets to procure sustenance.) Participating restaurants include The Grape and Urban Crust, and proceeds benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Center of Dallas.
