Upcoming Opportunities to Taste

|

There are always great opportunities to taste throughout the city.  Here are a few that sounded particularly fun over the next few weeks, and some help for Dad if you are still looking for the perfect gift.

Dad’s Day is Sunday, if you haven’t figured out your plans yet, it is time.  If your plan involves cooking for Dad then pick up a few special bottles of wine for him this weekend at the Sigel’s big Dad’s Day California Cabernet wine sale.  They have dusted off some older vintages from their cellar to ensure that Dad has a good bottle on his day.  A few stand outs include a 2004 Colgin Cariad 99 point for $399; a 1997 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet 98 point for $99.99; 2003 Araujo Eisele 98 point for $224.99; and a 1995 Harlan Estate Red 99 point for $499.99.  Options will vary at different locations.

For many years every Sunday night at Steel wine by the bottle is 1/2 off.  Wednesday nights Rathbun’s Blue Plate Kitchen offers half off wine by the bottle.  Maximo has a Mav-arita special this week for $5 Maverick blue frozen swirls or Mav-arita rocks or frozen margaritas, through Saturday. Veritas continues their half off wine by the glass on Monday nights, plus Wednesday nights order a cheese and charcuterie plate with at least 3 items and receive 20% off a bottle….what is better with your wine than Chef Brain Luscher’s Pork Rillette Pate from The Grape, or a Pecan Horseradish Cheddar from Brazos Valley Cheese Company.

Jimmy’s is about to get a shipment of Burrata in….if you are a Burrata fan you know how special this is.  It doesn’t happen often, and when the shipment comes in the shelf life of the cheese is only a few days before it goes bad.  But why would you let the creamy, dreamy gooey cheese go bad.  You must email Jimmy’s to place your request prior to Friday at 3pm, the shipment will come in next week.  [email protected] Stop by on June 22nd between 5pm and 7pm to enjoy their Italian Rose tasting as well. 10 Rose wines from Abruzzo, Tuscany, Sicily and more.

Screen Door in One Arts Plaza will host a Breckenridge Brewery beer dinner on June 23.  Four courses, including overnight braised Vanilla Porter pork shoulder and Grilled Flat Iron steak, with specialty craft beers from Breckenridge Brewery for $45, reservations required.  214-998-5140

The Grape will host an evening in Tuscany at their June 29th monthly “Come as you are” wine dinner.  Special guest Travis James from Avante Beverage will lead guests through the Italian pairings with Owner/Chef Brian Luscher creating a spot on 3-course dinner.  I have been to a number of these leisurely wine dinners and am always amazed at the combinations Chef comes up with to pair with the selected wine using local, fresh and creative influences. $45 per person, reservations recommended.

A little early, but mark your calendar for July 14th at Vino 100 for a sushi and Argentine Torrontes pairing with Steel and Bottled Poetry.  Torrontes is the perfect pairing for sushi, as it has both bright acidity and spice to compliment clean flavors and highlight the richness of the fish.
