A Soda Even Tim Might Drink

It may not be common knowledge outside these four glass walls, but our own Tim Rogers has recently given up his sugar shack membership, broken his vows to the cult of the cane, sworn (mostly) off the processed crap, and shuns sweeteners with a passion. So let’s see what he has to say about this:

Whole Foods has recently introduced Austin-based Sans Diet Soda to the market. The gimmick: Sans is free of artificial sweeteners and colors, and has no sugar or calories. The company partnered with Truvia to sweeten the drinks without that a weird bitter aftertaste a lot of other stevia-based drinks have.

The sodas come in five flavors: orange, lemon lime, cola, black cherry, and root beer.

So, what do you think? Is it natural? Is it cheating? But more than that, is it any good?

First of all, read this New York Times Magazine story about how sugar is likely toxic. Not just unhealthy. TOXIC. That’s what got me thinking about the sweet stuff.

Second, if this Sans Soda mixes well with whiskey, then I’m in.

  • Hi Sarah,

It is good – and no, that isn’t just me being the SANS Marketing Manager telling you it’s good because it’s my job. It actually is very good, which makes it a great pleasure to market. As a health food nut, and a foodie with a discriminating pallet, I’m proud to be a part of this new, scrappy brand. I’m a big fan of the Cola, Lemon Lime, and Black Cherry. All three are especially delicious over ice with a slice of fresh lime.

And the cans look quite snazzy in a retro-style red ice bucket at your next fancy party. Ok, that’s annoying marketing.

To answer Tim’s question, pairs quite nicely with both whiskey and rum. I recommend a try and can even send free SANS mixers.

Thanks for the shout, hope there will be more.

I’ve tried a couple flavors, and they were both really quite good.

I had the Root Beer and the Black Cherry, both good.

I’ve been trying to cut back on my cola intake (Trying being the operative word). I’m really trying to eat and drink healthier as i’m getting into my mid 30’s. So I’ve been trying to find a good natural cola, so I dont feel like i’m cheating when I have one.

I’m going to keep on trying the other flavors, but I might have found my new drink.

  • Charles

Sans Cola mixes deliciously well with Jameson!

  • I especially love the black cherry – very refreshing.

  • Sammy

    How much does it cost?

  • Paul

Glad to hear it Charles – but a question – What doesn’t mix well with Jameson’s 🙂 Happy Friday ya’ll!

  • Anne

Wait – Ms. Boysen is a marketing manager for a *beverage* company and misspelled the word ‘palate’??

    …really, Ms. Boysen?!!??

  • Marci

According to their website it’s only being sold in Austin??

    • Word is they just expanded to Dallas’ Whole Foods. My guess is that they haven’t updated their website yet.

  • Hi There Anne,
Good catch, ha! Going back and forth between logistics forms – i.e. soda *pallet* dimensions – and commenting on a blog post may not have been the best choice. I could try to pass it off as a clever pun, but I think I’ll instead admit epic fail.
