Last night I had the privilege to attend a small scotch tasting with The Macallan Single Malt Scotch  at Perry’s as they simulcast the Sotheby’s live auction of one bottle of 64 year old single malt in a Lalique crystal decanter, in celebration of Lalique founder, Renee Lalique’s, 150th birthday.

Over an exquisite tasting of 15 year Fine Oak, 18 year Sherry Oak, 30 year Fine Oak and The Macallan 1851 Inspiration, with flavorful bites of lobster, shrimp and tenderloin provided by Perry’s, The Macallan Ambassador, Jay Liddell, walked guests through why The Macallan is so special, the importance of the night and the Sotheby’s auction benefiting  Charity Water.

The Macallan and Lalique have a long history of working together, as they both believe in Rene Lalique’s founding principles – artisanal skills, precision, passion and creativity, and both have made their craft an art form, sought after by connoisseurs of both scotch and crystal.

The 64 year old Macallan is the oldest bottle ever released.  Created from single malt scotch aged in three different Sherry casks, the youngest of which is 64 years old.  The Lalique decanter took over a month to create, after the design was established.  There was only one of these bottles in the world, and last night, after raising $140,000 on auctioning off single drams (about 1 ounce pours) of the scotch, this special bottle was sold for $460,000 to an American bidder. WOW!

Proceeds for the night benefited Charity Water, an amazing not for profit that brings clean water to people in need across the world.  Worldwide 1 out of every 6 people do not have easy access to clean water, Charity Water hopes to change that.  In the three years since their conception they have created 2000 clean water projects helping over 1 million people in need around the world.  The funds raised last night will give 30,000 people clean drinking water for up to 20 years.
