Rusty Taco: First Look

Rhonda Reinhart is my favorite cube mate. She, like me, is obsessed with 24. Rhonda laughs at all of my Jack Bauer impressions. Like when I slink around the corner by the printer with my arms straight out in front with both hands clasp around my imaginary gun. Or when Wick leaves the office and I scream, “Set up and secure the perimeter!” The other day I told her a story and she said, “You’re lying.” Without a clock tick I said in my best Jack voice, “Yes, I am. But you’re still going to have to trust me.” Rhonda is still on the floor over that one!

Anywhoo, Rhonda got all excited about the Rusty Taco. This morning she got a couple of rusty tacos and files this report:

The last time I visited 4802 Greenville Ave., I got my brakes fixed. This time, I got some tacos. Today was a much better day — and a whole lot cheaper. The newly opened Rusty Taco has $2 pick-your-poison breakfast tacos with options such as crispy potatoes, roasted chilies, “casa-made chorizo,” and jalapenos. (Eggs come standard.) I tried a couple of combinations — one great, one not so much. The chorizo, cheese, and pico de gallo mix on flour tortilla (pictured) was the winner. It’s hard to go wrong with that trio of ingredients, but the chorizo was what really brought it home. The bacon, chilies, and cheese on corn wasn’t nearly as tasty. The combo was so bland, I had to douse it in salsa, but, on the plus side, I really dug the salsa — go for the red.

Bottom line: decent tacos at a good price and in my neighborhood. I will go back. I also plan to return for the $2.50 Coors Light and the jukebox. Seriously, it might be my new favorite. At the very least, it’s my favorite jukebox at a taco joint that used to be a Just Brakes. Here’s a taste of the tunes: Neil Young, the Avett Brothers, Willie Nelson (the Red Headed Stranger album!), Son Volt, Ryan Bingham, the Crazy Heart soundtrack, Bruce Springsteen, and what looked like some rocking mariachi artists. Well done, Rusty Taco, well done.

Copy that, Rhonda. Cover me, I’m going in.
