J. Dorian vs. Sprinkles: Raspberry Cupcake Showdown

jdorian-300x2251Last week Sprinkles delivered raspberry cupcakes to our office. Then I got an e-mail from Dorian Isenberg of J. Dorian Chocolatier, who wanted to send us his version of a raspberry cupcake. You may recall that our resident Sweet Tooth, Miss Kyle Kearbey, blogged about J. Dorian cupcakes when they first came out. I’m happy to report that they are still as delicious—and beautiful—as they were then, although this pic isn’t quite as pretty as the ones Kyle posted before. These are chocolate cupcakes—so moist and light!—with an airy, whipped raspberry center. The frosting is white chocolate buttercream—just the right amount of sweet—dusted with freeze-dried raspberry powder. While we’re not really comparing apples to apples here, after a semi-official poll of the cupcake taste-testers, J. Dorian emerged victorious.

We love J. Dorian Chocolates so we were so excited to hear a while back (on SideDish!) that they were offering cupcakes. We went to the store on a weekday afternoon to try them… and were SO disappointed! The catatonic woman behind the counter barely blinked at us when we walked in. We told her that we wanted to try the cupcakes. She waved her hand in the general direction of the case and said, “Here they are.” We must have literally woken her from a nap in the back. When asked what the flavors were like, she just repeated the names listed on the cards with no enthusiasm or elaboration. We paid as much or more than we usually do at Sprinkles and left. Sometimes employees have off days, so we decided to not judge the book by the cover and dig in. Upon tasting all of the flavors (not raspberry) our family came to our own conclusion. The frosting on the chocolate cupcake varieties was great but vanilla was just plain boring. The cake on all flavors however was dry and tasted like it came out of a box from the grocery store. Conclusion: Leave the baking to the experts and stick with chocolate, Mr. Dorian.

P.S. The cupcakes are $3.50 each or $42/dozen.

One thing I’ve learned reading Side Dish: Cupcake culture is apparently recession proof.

One thing I wonder when reading Side Dish re: Sprinkles and now J.Dorian.

    Do they offer layaway?”

Wrong, wrong, wrong! I am a devoted J. Dorian fan and drove 30 minutes today to break my diet for just ONE “to die for” J. Dorian cupcake. My favorite is the black and white (with the mousse center) but I always pick up a lemon for my husband and my daughter would kill me if I didn’t come home with one of the yummy red velvets for her! My husband even said (and I quote) that “the lemon frosting is the best I have ever had”. I’ve only had Sprinkles once and WAS NOT impressed. I’ll continue making the drive to J. Dorian on my “cheat days”! 🙂

I just tried J. Dorian cupcakes today for the first time and I am in LOVE! I went with a friend who had been before and believe me when I say I have had my share of cupcakes from all over the country. These are definitely at the top of my list. The Red Velvet one was amazing, not too sweet and very moist. The raspberry one was fabulous too. I am a fan and will be a repeat customer for sure!

I’ve been having cupcakes in London, NY and Dallas over the past month . . . just you wait til I get PD to big D!

  • I’m not a fan of cupcakes. Cakes, I like cakes.

I tried the cupcakes after reading about them on Side Dish the first time and and I think they are the best I’ve tried in Dallas. I know the woman Luann is talking about and I will agree her customer service skills are lacking but the cupcakes are delicious, moist and just the right size. My favorites are the Black & White and the Red Velvet. My only criticism is I think they are a tad expensive at $3.50 plus tax.

I hope some of the readers go back and get a chance to run into Dorian himself. He is probably one the nicest, warmest people in Dallas. On my first trip, I was pregnant and craving chocolate, so I drug my diabetic mom in with me. She was getting a little glum looking at all the treats she couldn’t have, and Dorian must have noticed. He struck up a conversation with her almost immediately. It turns out – he’s diabetic too! And steered her towards his sugar-free, chocolate-covered corn flakes. He completely made her day, and I will never forget that. The Dallas food world could use more people like Dorian. He is all class.

Went to J Dorian this week on a lunch break and took about 10 cupcakes back to the office. They were incredible! THE BEST! Dorian helped me out with it all and couldn’t have been a nicer guy! I’m super impressed with him and will be singing his praises.
