$5 Lunch: Wild About Harry’s

img_0099Expecting an abundance of choices in the $5 ish and under range, I stopped in at Wild About Harry’s for lunch today. It was tough not to get custard and be done with it, but I thought others might not consider that a “lunch,” so I focused on the hot dog section of the menu. Sadly, I priced myself out of any combo meals, so I had to make due on dog alone (and water to wash it down with, sad). Jump for more.

img_0098I ordered the Chicago Dog, mostly because I’d heard that was a really good one and also because I had been standing there staring at the menu for a really long time trying to figure out how to get something besides just one hot dog for under $5. At least the Chicago has a pickle on it, I reasoned. I sat in the dining room to the right of the main room at a little table near the window. It was 1:30, and there was only one other table of people eating. About two minutes later they called my name and I got my dog. It was topped with that famous neon green relish, two sport peppers (small green peppers that have been pickled), chopped tomatoes, mustard, and a pickle spear. The dog had a nice snap when I bit into it, and it was super meaty and juicy. The poppyseed bun was soft but didn’t fall apart or get mushy. I could have done without the tomatoes, which were unripe and didn’t add anything to the flavor. The sport peppers were pretty hot. I’m a wimp, there’s no denying it. But I loved the crunchy pickle, the sweet relish, and the mustard. I got about six great bites (dog to bun ratio was also exactly even).

But then, I was done. My $4.86 was spent, but I was not full. Maybe this makes me a huge pig. But I could have eaten another one. Instead, I downed my water in an effort to fill my stomach, and looked longingly at the custard as I made my exit.

Overall: a great hotdog at Harry’s. And a great price. But definitely spend an extra couple of dollars and get the combo meal so you can get fries.
