On the Road Review: Woody’s Smokehouse

After I asked for dining options for my drive from Dallas to Matagorda, Texas, several Dishers suggested that I hit Woody’s Smokehouse in Centerville, Texas. So like a good neighbor, I did. Full disclosure: it was pouring rain and I had two dogs in the back of the car so our visit was brief. That said, we ordered sandwiches from the back counter and ate them as we grazed the aisles filled with thousands of jarred preserves, relishes, fruits, vegetables, and sauces.

They don’t refer to themselves as the “Jerky Capital of the World” for nothing–they make too-many-for-me-to-count varieties of dried meat stix. The people working in the restaurant when our party of eight landed were also jerky. All of the sandwich makers, meat counter workers, and cashiers we encountered were crabby and short-tempered. The chopped brisket was dry but the German sausage on whole wheat (pictured) with house made relish was delish. The ham was average, I prefer Ham-I-Am over Woody’s. However, the Texas-road-trash scene is a people watchers dream. And the dogs did appreciate the green field behind the restaurant. More photos below.
