There’s no denying Bobbi Brown’s immense impact on how women approach getting ready. From pioneering the artfully undone “no-makeup” look to her trademark pinky/brown “nude” lip, she is the arbiter of pretty, easy, approachable (but utterly transforming) beauty.

I had a chance to steal a few minutes with the incomparable cosmetics queen when she was in town earlier this week promoting her inspiring new tome, Pretty Powerful. (Actually the lovely Raya graciously invited me to tag along on her interview. Thanks Raya!) Here are three takeaways from our time together.

1. She’s a staunch proponent of the mom “uniform.” — When we chatted she was sporting a perfectly tailored black blazer, boyfriend jeans, a well-cut black t-shirt, and a pair of killer wedges. Minimal jewelry, black rimmed glasses and a spot-on smoky eye rounded out her look. Suffice to say, I am feeling validated in my obsession with the jean/blazer/wedge combo. If one of the most powerful and chic businesswomen in America can do it, so can the rest of us, yes?

Further underscoring the chicness of sartorial simplicity, when asked how she gets ready for the day on the quick she noted, “I pull my hair in a pony tail, put on some nice earrings, comfy clothes and a pair of great shoes. I do corrector and concealer, blush, line my eyes, and do a really dark black mascara. The super black mascara is the thing.”

2. She’s a foodie — Her go-to healthy snacks are kale chips and rice crackers (she pulled a huge package out of her bag as proof), and she lives for her Vitamix blender, noting, “It’s expensive, but you’ll have it forever. I throw in some broccoli and low sodium chicken broth and the Vitamix turns it into a delicious meal.

She believes that good food is hard to come by, but is key to everything — the essential starting point for beauty. “If I had another career it would be as a nutritional chef… I love cooking for my three sons, I’ll make filet on the grill with a side of broccoli rabe and garlic bread.” And her foodie tendencies have rubbed off on her kids, as Bobbi says, “all three are major kitchen guys…at family functions we’re always cooking together.”

3. She believes in imperfection and taking time off — “Looking back I wish I knew it’s ok not to be perfect,” Bobbi says, adding, “I always wanted to walk into an event at Neiman Marcus looking perfect, but I was tired, disheveled, usually traveling with my kids. And that was ok.” On recharging, she notes, “Take days off to recharge with your kids after you travel. I need it, and they need me.”

Take a peek at Raya’s post on Bobbi’s “not-so-hot” looks, her new products, and why she loves “very, very black mascara.”

(Note to self: Buy a tube of super black mascara stat.)
