in the gift closet: framed scrap-fabric art diy

A few weeks ago, when I found myself pressed for time and short a birthday gift for a kiddo friend’s birthday party, I asked my husband to scoop up a white frame at Target, knowing that if all else failed (which it did) that I could whip up something artful and pretty for our little friend to hang in her room. About, oooo…. twenty minutes before said birthday party, I raided my fabric cabinet and pieced together this little collage. By “snowflaking” a fuschia silk frayed remnant and laying it on top of two strips of canvas with frayed edges, I struck up a lovely little material dialogue with the smooth silk and rough canvas. Set behind the crisp white mat board, the collage just popped.

Boom and bam! — an artful, personal gift for the cost of a frame. It goes without saying that the visual possibilities are endless on this one.
