pint-sized sartorialists

A couple of months ago I heard a brilliant, accomplished (and supremely groovy) DJ speak at a conference. He said a lot of interesting things, but the best moment was when an audience member asked about his mother’s role in his creativity, and he noted that she mostly stepped back and let him express himself, frequently telling him:

“I don’t care if you dye your hair blue, just don’t do anything stupid.”

I think about that line at least three times a week now that I’ve entered the “clothing battle” phase with my girlies.  It’s a good reminder that in the grand scheme of things the fact that my four-year old wants to wear the same Foofa shirt three days in a row, not only doesn’t matter a whit, but might actually be fostering her creativity (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). And when I mellow out and let my kids wear whatever they want (within reason) more often than not, I’m impressed and totally inspired by their sort of wonky sartorial prowess…

I was digging all the cool kid’s outfits at last week’s Dallas Clayton reading, and the best ensembles were the ones they’d put together completely on their own.

Well done littles.

A few of our favorite combos…

Checks + a killer fedora…

Sparkly Tom’s paired with a sweet crochet necklace (and look at her amazing red hair)…

A tutu tempered with a slouchy t-shirt…

p.s. speaking of kiddo clothes, the awesome Three Sisters Consignment sale is this week-end…  Perfect for stocking up on warm-weather duds.
