Amazon officials have confirmed today that a lease has been signed at a 1 million square foot warehouse in the City of Irving, further increasing its footprint in North Texas.
Located at 2601 S. Airfield Drive, the facility will serve as a fulfillment center. According to Amazon officials, it will create 1,000 new, full-time jobs with industry-leading pay of $15 an hour and comprehensive benefits starting on day one. Employees will pick, pack, and ship customer orders.
“We’re very pleased that Amazon has chosen to grow their business at DFW Airport in Irving as so many other industry leaders have,” said Beth A. Bowman, president and CEO of the Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce and Irving Economic Development Partnership. “Amazon is an important stakeholder in Irving, and their decision to commit to a 1 million square feet adds to our economic development momentum.”
Irving-Las Colinas is home to seven Fortune 500 companies and five Fortune 1000 companies.
“The 1,000 jobs Amazon anticipates hiring will have an important economic impact on our City and North Texas,” Bowman continued. “Because of Irving-Las Colinas’ visionary elected and stakeholder leadership, we’ve prepared for this growth with an important investment in infrastructure and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system. These community attributes are the reason more corporations are committing to Irving-Las Colinas, where their business and workforce can have a local address with global access.”
Amazon officials told D CEO there are a lot of contributing factors that go into our thought process on where to place a new fulfillment center, “We look at the workforce and found talent in abundance in Texas. We’re also responding to customer demand and want to make sure our fulfillment centers are close to customers so we can offer great Prime service and fast shipping speeds.”
Amazon also leased another 465,450 square feet of space in the Interstate Crossing building in North Fort Worth and leased the 419,626 square foot Eastpoint Distribution Center in Far East Dallas.
Rumors had been abuzz about the possibility of the new fulfillment center after recent plans were submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation that described an unnamed tenant at the facility near DFW International Airport.
According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation plans, a retrofitting of the space would cost an estimated $53 million and could be completed by August.
The DFW Commerce Center building is a project of Dallas’ Copeland Commercial and was designed to include four big warehouse and distribution buildings.
