Paging Netflix!! Last night, I watched The Harder They Fall, which was one of my picks for this week’s FrontRow newsletter. (Subscribe here!) The film opens, like all great Westerns, with an aerial shot of the agricultural Texas plains. In this case, it’s the border town of Salinas, located about 515 miles south of Dallas. We are the home of the cowboys in pop culture, after all. However, as the film progresses with numerous Black cowgirls and cowboys sparring in gun fights, robbing banks, and Jonathan Majors breaking out an angelic singing voice, all I could think about is, “Where in the hell is Leon Bridges?”
If there is one person in mainstream music and pop culture who exemplifies the Texas cowboy, it is Leon! Name one time you have not seen the Fort Worth crooner in a Western-inspired fit? The man loves a starched white shirt, denim jeans, boots, and a gold chain (because it’s icy). His vocals would have been the cherry on top for the Jay Z produced soundtrack! This is no disrespect to H.O.V., but if you’re going to produce a film set in Texas, with a Texas lead, can we at least get one local song on the soundtrack?
