The Dallas Zoo has been taking us on a rollercoaster of emotions lately. Early this month, its plump baby hippo, Adanna, made a triumphant debut after the zoo dealt with a rough of couple years in the hippo habitat. Then, only last week, the zoo’s gangly baby giraffe, Witten, died while under anesthesia for a routine check-up. It was really sad. So, today’s bit of heartwarming zoo news was much needed.
The Dallas Zoo’s baby gorilla, Saambili, turned one year old today, and the animal’s caretakers created an amazing fruit and veggie “cake” for the occasion.
The first gorilla born in the Dallas Zoo in 20 years, Saambili now weighs 18 pounds and has begun to make vocalizations, laugh when tickled (omg), and playfully beat her chest.
Saambili isn’t the only party animal around; the Dallas Zoo’s African crested porcupine Chimalsi also celebrated a birthday on Friday, and the staff presented him with a hilarious pine cone treat. Just look at it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHIMALSI: African crested porcupine Chimalsi has that #FridayFeeling today! He recently celebrated his 7th birthday with a special pine cone treat, courtesy of his wonderful keepers. Help us give him some birthday love! 💚
