After going big budget with last year’s Disney remake Pete’s Dragon, Dallas director David Lowery is back in indie territory with the “phantom opus” A Ghost Story. A24, the studio behind almost every single indie flick you’ve loved over the last couple years, released the trailer today.

The movie, which got rave reviews this year at Sundance, follows a man (Oscar winner and past Lowery collaborator Casey Affleck) watching his wife (Rooney Mara) from the afterlife, where it seems souls with unfinished business are given homemade ghost costumes and dispatched to haunt their suburban homes. Variety says the experimental drama is “like nothing you’ve ever seen.”
Shot last summer in and around Dallas, the film also features a vegan chocolate cream pie cameo courtesy of Spiral Diner.
A Ghost Story is out July 7. In the more immediate future, as part of the Dallas International Film Festival, you can catch a free outdoor screening of Pete’s Dragon at Main Street Garden downtown on April 1.
