Nasher Prize Festivities Lead a Busy Arts Weekend in Dallas

And Dallas Arts Week is now Dallas Arts Month, because you can't do justice to the growing scene in just seven days.

Next week will be the busiest of the calendar year in the art world. Formerly called Dallas Arts Week, it has now expanded into Dallas Arts Month, because the Dallas art scene has grown so much that you can’t possibly try to showcase it in only a week. Dallas Arts Month kicks off this Saturday with a slew of openings across the city. But first, the Nasher Sculpture Center concludes its Nasher Prize Month by bringing out the star power. This year’s winner of the 2017 Nasher Prize, a $100,000 award given annually by the museum, is French artist Pierre Huyghe. The prize is the largest award presented to a living sculptor in the world.

On Thursday the Nasher Prize Dialogues, which are free and open to the public with an RSVP, offer a graduate symposium with papers presented by art history students from London, Leeds, Berlin, Melbourne, and San Diego. The discussion will be moderated by Pavel Pyś, curator of visual art at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The keynote speaker is renowned art theorist and scholar, Nicolas Bourriaud, director of the La Panacée art center in Montpellier, France, who will speak at 3 p.m.

On Friday, National Gallery of Art Senior Curator Lynne Cooke, Haus der Kunst Director Okwui Enwezor, and Jed Morse, the Nasher’s chief curator, describe the process of selecting the winner at 10:30 a.m. at the Dallas Museum of Art. Then Pierre Huyghe himself speaks in conversation with Cooke at Booker T Washington High School at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, several galleries have daytime openings, including Erin Cluley and Galleri Urbane. DeColonize Dallas, presented by Michelada Think Tank, which I am a member of, kicks off its run of events and exhibitions with Super Fantasy Mercado 2 at Red Bird (Southwest Center) Mall. Dallas favorite Simeen Farhat is at Cris Worley, John Pomara is at Barry Whistler, and Gabriel Dawe is at Conduit Gallery. However, perhaps the most well-attended show will be the second Arte y Pan Dulce at the Meet Shop in Oak Cliff, hosted by Lucha Dallas and organized by Mariah Garza and Susana Edith. This show of artists of color in various disciplines particularly tries to center womxn, queer, and trans people of color. If one wants to see what the future of Dallas will be like, swing by this show.
