A Brief Dallas Retrospective Before the ‘Dallas Retrospective’

Before Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy spend Thursday chatting at the Winspear, we do some recollecting of our own.

On Thursday, Dallas stars Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy will be at the Winspear to talk about the legacy of the hit TV show, and to reflect on their experiences with a program whose pop culture influence shouldn’t be understated. It also, for better or worse, helped define Dallas (the city), or at least its perception among a global audience.

Because Gray and Duffy shouldn’t get to have all the fun reminiscing about Dallas, we thought we’d take a quick stroll down a parallel memory lane. To that end, here’s a short list of Dallas memories, assembled into something of a “clip show” format:

Remember when Dallas helped topple an oppressive communist regime in Romania?

Remember that time D Magazine interviewed Linda Gray before her 75th birthday, and the star discussed her memoir and the sexism she encountered while working on Dallas? What about that time, a few years before then, when D Magazine wrote about Dallas, its most iconic character, J.R. Ewing, and Larry Hagman, the man who played him, ahead of the show’s 2012 reboot?

Remember when somebody shot J.R. and the world was left clinging to television’s most precipitous cliff?

How about that theme, y’all?

While most of the violence on Dallas is psychological, who can forget the many times the Ewings resorted to their fists and feet?

Remember worrying about, and subsequently coming to terms with, the fact that Dallas could perpetuate stereotypes about North Texans to a global audience?

Remember when a visit to Southfork Ranch became a major tourist draw?

Remember J.R. Ewing’s most villainous moments?
