The Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau would have you believe that big things happen here. Important things. Record-setting things.

In an effort to both quantify and qualify this idea, we went digging through the Guinness World Records website for big things in North Texas. We found some, including the world’s tallest donkey and largest Frito pie. We found other records that were weird, amusing, and worth presenting in list format.

World’s oldest adoption (Dallas)

The cliche of a “heartwarming story” became a cliche because of stories like this, where no adjective but “heartwarming” really fits. Last June in a Dallas courtroom, 92-year-old Muriel Clayton adopted Mary Smith, 76, making official a lifelong relationship — Clayton had raised her younger first cousin as a daughter.

Most tennis balls held in the mouth – dog (Dallas)

Augie the golden retriever, undoubtedly a good dog, set this record in July 2003 with five regulation tennis balls. We were unable to find the record for “most tennis balls held in the mouth – human.”

Most breastmilk donated (Argyle)

The impressive number here is 414 — that’s how many gallons of breast milk a Denton woman donated to the Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas in a little more than three years.

Largest gathering of people dressed as turkeys (Dallas)

A group of 661 people donned the feathers of the noble bird for the YMCA Turkey Trot in 2011.

Most people making sandwiches simultaneously (Dallas)

Guinness-certified glory is its own cause, but the sandwiches TangoTab and the organization’s 2,586 Friends made at the convention center in February went to charitable food banks, which is even better.

Largest shaving cream pie fight (Dallas)

How else would one celebrate International Clown Week?

Most people wearing The Cat in the Hat hats at once (Highland Park)

Largest game of knockout basketball (Dallas)

Largest belt buckle (Fort Worth)
