Variety reports today that A&E has ordered a reality television show following Saffron Herndon, the 11-year-old stand-up comic from Mesquite who D Magazine profiled in December, when she was just a 10-year-old stand-up comic from Mesquite.
According to the Variety exclusive, Little Funny, which is being produced by Ellen DeGeneres, will premiere in 2017.
It will follow ‘Saffy’ Herndon as she storms the comedy world with coaching from the kind of stand-up dream team — Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes, among others, are named — that only precocious talent and viral fame can buy.
For whatever it’s worth, when Herndon performed at Hyena’s with Aaron Aryanpur and Kevin Farley a few months back, she was at least the second funniest person on stage. A bit that involves doing the robot (dance) and relies on a technique of hilarity-through-repetition, seen in The Simpsons’ immortal rake gag and the naming of Dallas Morning News Editor Mike Wilson’s dog, was particularly good.
This kid, in our professional estimation, is going places.
