Dallas artist Dam Lam is gearing up for her very first solo exhibition. Her vibrant “Drip” series came to life in 2015, and has since gained momentum due, in a large part, to her Instagram account. Her creations have caught the eye of art enthusiasts worldwide, including that of pop star Miley Cyrus who Lam says contacted her directly for a “Drip” sculpture.
The 28-year-old artist started making the sculptures when she moved to Dallas. “They were experiments and I was exploring [the process],” she says. The whimsical creations are constructed using polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and resin. Lam also uses her nitrile gloves in each figure. “My hands are really involved,” she says. “I take all my gloves off after working and collect them and then use them inside of my pieces. It’s kind of like my ‘artist hand.’”
Lam graduated with a master’s degree in painting and drawing from Arizona State University in 2014. She taught color theory as a student, and her knowledge of complimentary hues is obvious in her work. “Color theory puts into words what I’ve always been thinking,” she says.
All of Lam’s sculptures are unique and she says the series embodies the space in-between beauty and ugliness. Lam’s first solo exhibition is running at Fort Work Arts in Fort Worth from August 2 until September 17. Her sculptures run from $600 to $2,000 and can be purchased prior to the show here.
