Erykah Badu celebrated her 45th birthday Friday night with Dave Chappelle and what seemed like half the city of Dallas at a sold-out show at the Bomb Factory. Backed by The Cannabinoids, Badu performed a set that delivered her patented blend of soulful mysticism before she was joined on stage by a group of family and friends including:
- Andre 3000, one-half of Outkast and the father of…
- Badu’s son (who inherited a pretty decent voice, judging from his contributions to the “Tyrone” sing-along at the end of the show), the grandson of…
- Badu’s mother, known to much of the country as “Ms. Jackson.”
Chappelle was, unsurprisingly, a very funny emcee, and an Andre 3000 appearance always feels special, even if the crowd was denied a performance of 3 Stacks and Badu’s outstanding collaboration from last year, “Hello.”
But the birthday girl was the clear star of the show. The Dallas native gets called the “queen of neo-soul” for good reason, and Badu certainly feels like royalty in this town. The queen’s birthday parties always double as wonderful jam sessions, and an opportunity to thank our lucky stars for an artist as phenomenal as Badu.
