The year is still young, but a full slate of productions in Dallas and Fort Worth are already here. Start off 2016 right by spending some time in the theater.
Death Is A Bad Habit! | Eisemann Center for Performing Arts (through Jan. 24)
Pegasus Theatre applies its trademark look — the production, including the actors, are rendered in black-and-white — to the latest noir adventure of Harry Hunsacker, thespian and private detective.
Sexy Laundry | Stage West (through Jan. 31)
This comedy about a couple’s efforts to resuscitate a flagging marriage with a weekend visit to a fancy hotel was a hit during two runs at WaterTower Theatre last year. Now Fort Worth gets to see what all the fuss is about.
Martyr | Bryant Hall at Kalita Humphreys Theater (Jan. 13-Feb. 6)
Second Thought Theatre kicks off its season with Martyr, an acclaimed and challenging work about religious fundamentalism, turbulent youth, and fear.
Aida | Dallas City Performance Hall (Jan. 15-17)
Uptown Players and Turtle Creek Chorale join forces for a massive production of the hit musical by Elton John and Tim Rice. With only three performances, you’ll want to catch this one while you can.
Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings | Clarence Muse Cafe Theatre at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (Jan. 22 & 23)
This one-man show about the life gospel singer-turned-gospel preacher Al Green is just one highlight of a busy month at TBAAL.
Lord of the Flies | Addison Theatre Centre (Jan. 22-Feb. 14)
WaterTower Theatre adapts the classic story of civilization and survival following a group of British schoolboys stranded on an island. Local high school students will put on their own version of the show, which will run concurrently with WaterTower’s professional production — Check WaterTower’s website for those select performances.
If/Then | Winspear Opera House (Jan. 27-31)
Much of the original Broadway cast is intact for this Dallas showing of the hit musical about finding love in New York City and living with the decisions we make.
Romeo and Juliet | Kalita Humphreys Theater (Jan. 27-Feb. 28)
Dallas Theater Center’s production of the Shakespeare classic will, of course, run through Valentine’s Day and to the end of February, but consider getting an early jump on what is likely to be a hot ticket. This is a contemporary adaptation, putting a fresh spin on a story that’s kept audiences enthralled for centuries.
