As a general rule, I am not OK with Christmas music. It’s schmaltzy, it’s boring, and for at least one month every year, it’s everywhere. It’s so unavoidable that it becomes necessary to make compromises.

I am OK with the state I call home. I am OK with music. I am especially inclined to be OK with music made by people who also call or have called Texas home. If that music just happens to have something to do with Christmas, I can live with that.

So while “Jingle Bells” or “White Christmas” might make me feel like waterboarding myself with eggnog, there is Christmas music out there that we can all agree on. And that, friends, is what the spirit of Christmas is all about.

Here are five songs to help make the soundtrack for your Christmas in Texas a little jollier.

Robert Earl Keen – “Merry Christmas From The Family”
