Dallas Opera to Launch Program for Women Conductors

The new institute is intended to address a "long-standing" issue of women conductors being underrepresented in the field.

The Dallas Opera announced Monday it will launch a new program to help address the “long-standing” issue of women conductors being underrepresented in the field. The Institute for Women Conductors, which will be inaugurated on Nov. 28, will providing training and support for young women working in the art form, according to a statement from the opera. Six women will be chosen for the program’s inaugural class, and will have the chance to conduct the Dallas Opera Orchestra. Participants will also take master classes and attend seminars on how women can become more prominent at the podium.

Conductors 40 years and younger are asked to apply for the residential program online. Accomplished singers, coaches, and instrumentalists are also invited to apply.
