The Week’s 5 Best Art Events

In addition to some great new shows, this week's column includes a few news bits that offer reason to be optimistic about the state of Dallas art.

I’ve got a few picks below, but first allow me a moment to note a few news items this week in lieu of the briefs.

The Dallas Art Fair announced its full list of galleries. I’d like to point out a few optimistic notes. The first is that a lot of galleries keep coming back. Retention means the bloody thing is working, which means people — and not just a smattering of top collectors — are buying art. The second is that the strength of the new galleries entering the mix indicate that word has gotten out that the Dallas Art Fair is worth the time and expense. This year’s fair includes a significant increase in European galleries, as well as some stronger galleries out of New York. We’ll have plenty of time to talk art fairs later, but, regardless of the usual critiques, the more dealers and taste makers the fair can draw to Dallas the better.

Also, check out Bill Davenport’s little pre-game write-up ahead of some panel discussion they’re having in Houston about how to help their artists, or art scene, or some otherwise very Dallas-style navel gazing. It can be encouraging to have someone from outside the city point out what’s working, and Davenport nails a curious dynamic that has taken root in Dallas:

Several wealthy people in Dallas have private museums. Sure, they’re doing it for snob value, but The Power Station, the Rachofsky Collection, and the Goss-Michael Foundation are bringing some very interesting art to their city, and maybe more importantly, they’re hiring Dallas artists, at living wages, to manage them. Every one of those artists has turned around, cashed their paycheck and sunk their own hard-earned money into the DIY alternative spaces that are currently lighting up the city.

Expect the trend to continue. Rumor has it another Dallas art collecting heavyweight is planning a new private museum on Hi Line in the Design District.  And another thing Davenport says Houston should be envious of: the Dallas developers offering free space to artists. Now if we could only get more dealers, curators, and critics from outside Dallas to look more closely at the artists these various schemes are sustaining.

Okay, on to the picks. This week we have a THRWD Magazine-programmed night of oddness at OFG (the press release points to this trailer as a preview); what would be the last in the Trans.lation Vickery Meadow pop-ups if the Nasher hadn’t decided to extend the run; Apophenia Underground, formerly of Deep Ellum Windows fame, popping up at Red Arrow; a progressive performance at Ro2 that will lead from the gallery to Main Street Garden; and an architecture lecture on the decade that, if I may be so blunt, screwed up Dallas’ urban design.
