5 Weekend Art Gallery Picks, Including Teddy Cruz, a Jim Crow-Era Stain, Art Con 9, and More

Hard to believe it's almost been 10 years since Art Con got its start. Plus, an architect who blends cross-cultural forms, an exposed segregating drinking fountain in a Dallas County building, and more.

cruzVisiting Artist Lecture: Teddy Cruz at SMU Meadows Owen Arts Center, O’Donnell Hall — November 13: 7-8:30 p.m. 6101 Bishop Ave. Dallas, TX 75205.

When architect Teddy Cruz comes to Texas, he faces an obvious and unfortunate obstacle of name recognition. The irony is that while our Cruz monkey wrenches immigration reform, this Cruz has developed a practice that bridges cultural and political contexts, working in the culturally-blended region around San Diego and Tijuana to explore how architecture, housing, and urban policy can draw from the way seemingly blighted neighborhoods adapt, reuse, and retrofit to create more vibrant architectural and social models.

barnabyBarnabacio (1953-1980): things outside art–curated by Barnaby Fitzgerald at Carillon Gallery, Tarrant County College South — November 14: 6-8 p.m. 5301 Campus Dr. Fort Worth, TX 76119.

There’s a peculiar similarity between the names of the curator of this exhibition, Barnaby Fitzgerald, and its exhibited artist, “Barnabacio.” Barnacacio’s work, we are told, skirts on the periphery of art, employing artifacts to explore tangential thinking that is odd, surprising, elegant or humorous. Good luck finding a paper trail on Barnabacio, who seems to have materialized on the scene out of thin air  (though you may have seen his work in The Art Foundation’s Twain), or purchasing any of his work. The pieces in this show are from a “private collection in Italy.”

whiteA Dallas Drinking Fountain Project by Lauren Woods at the Dallas County Records Building — November 15: 12-1 p.m. 509 Main St. Dallas, TX 75202.

A Dallas Drinking Fountain Project offers an opportunity for orchestrated awareness, a way to create a context that brings attention to an uncomfortable cultural artifact. That artifact is the faded words “white only,” which were discovered on the wall of the Dallas County Records Building after a plate that had been screwed into the wall to cover the indelible mark had fallen off in 2003 to reveal the uncomfortable and all too tactile reminder of the Jim Crow era. There was a bit of controversy at the time, but now Lauren Woods has worked with Dallas County to turn the stain of the past into an opportunity for reflection on the legacy of the past and our responsibility towards remembrance and restitution. In addition to the faded words, Woods has created an interactive water fountain which will trigger a video projection of newsreel footage from the Civil Rights movement. The project also hopes to use the occasion of the anniversary of the JFK assassination to further its poignant context for reflection.

artconArt Conspiracy 9 — Novemeber 16: 7-11 p.m. 500 Singleton Blvd. Dallas, TX 75212.

Not to jump ahead or anything, but Art Con is approaching its tenth anniversary, which kind of makes the perennial upstart art party/auction feel almost like a stalwart institution (after all, they now have a VIP party and their website calls them a “street level” org while they boast an “executive team”). But the anniversary feels odd considering, in my mind, Art Con represents a turning point in Dallas, and in particular Oak Cliff, which ushered in the “now,” meaning something galvanized with Art Con, something changed in the way neighborhood protagonists understood themselves, their role, and the scope and scale of possibility. In the last 9 years since the event began as an impromptu means to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina evacuees, its founders have gone on to launch projects from La Reunion to Better Block, but not much has changed in Art Con’s simple concept. It’s still an open call, art making party that allows anyone to indulge their creative urge and raises funds for a selected organization (this year it’s My Possibilities, a non-profit that serves adults with disabilities). And as always, there’s a musical bill to boot, including New Fumes, Zhora, and DJ emptycylinder.

tikiSurface Tiki: Everything Is OK by Justin Hunter Allen at BEEFHAUS — November 16: 7 p.m. 833 Exposition Ave. Dallas, TX 75226.

The energetic, new-ish Expo Park art space, BEEFHAUS, offers neighbor and S.C.A.B.-associated artist Justin Hunter Allen his first painting solo show, self-described as “a venture in the narrative of modern formalism.” Allen is also producing a publication in conjunction which the show, which draws its inspiration from a variety of sources, including reflections on the context and language surrounding recent artist-driven activity in Dallas, burgeoning-ness, ethical trolling, and the implications of the practice of websites like this one which refer to people like Allen as “S.C.A.B.-associated.”
