Our Picks

contempAlive for 35 at the Dallas Contemporary – Nov 8: 1 p.m. – 12 a.m. 161 Glass St. Dallas, TX 75207

For the complete schedule of the Dallas Contemporary’s 35th anniversary bash, which will see the art space stay open for a marathon 35 hours straight, go here. Events include music at midnight, a 2 a.m. screening of Superman, a 10 a.m. children’s story hour, a street art bike tour, artist talks, a wrestling performance, naked girls reading, belly dancers, a “gender illusionist,” a gospel choir, and much, much more, such as, appropriately, a screening of Animal House.

nutWelcome to Nut Country! Short Lectures on What the JFK Assassination Tells us About Dallas at CentralTrak – November 8: 7 p.m. 800 Exposition Ave., Dallas, TX 75226.

Are you tired of the JFK Assassination yet? Well, too bad. It’s only just the second weekend of November, so brace yourself. This weekend Sally Warren hosts a series of short lectures by White Metropolis author Michael Phillips and SMU English professor Tom Stone focusing on what the JFK Assassination can tell us about Dallas. It’s a companion piece to an exhibition Warren organized that opens later in the month at Gray Matters Gallery.

guffinMacGuffin by HOMECOMING! Committee at And X art space – November 8: 5-9 p.m. 3511 Locke St. Fort Worth, TX 76107.

Homecoming Committee wants you to subscribe to their You Tube channel so that you can receive video feeds from their latest odd ball concoction-art stunt in the Fort Worth art space. For a group of artists with an appetite for construing fictions, I expect a hyperized-cyberized Macguffining.

contin“Artists Open Studios” at the Continental Gin Building – November 8: 6-10 p.m. and November 9: 2-8 p.m. 3309 Elm Street, Dallas Tx 75226.

The second anniversary of the weekend celebrates another vital local space, the Continental Gin artist studios, which celebrate 25 years.

mac“Walk Bout” by Paul Anthony Smith, “Before Our Eternal Silence” by Jenny Vogel, “Forces, the Will and the Weather” by Bethany Johnson, at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary – November 9-8 p.m. 3120 McKinney Avenue, Dallas, Tx 75204.

I’m intrigued by the work of Paul Anthony Smith, a young Jamacan-American artist with a fluid, lucid style that obscures as it monumentalizes, plumbing questions of identity. class, hierarchy, and ritual.
