Two video art exhibitions open this weekend that are worth pointing out. The first is the latest curatorial project by James Cope, formerly of Goss-Michael, who has organized an exhibition of videos at SMU’s Pollock Gallery centering around Spike Jonze’s directorial debut, the influential skate video Video Days (1991). Jonze is one of six artists, including Larry Clark, Florian Drexel, Nicolas Provost, Christopher Samuels, and Ryan Wolfe, in a show that promises to explore issues around that tired old concept, the “American Dream.”
On Saturday, 500x opens a massive exhibition of video works by 100 artists who were each selected and randomly assigned a year from the 20th century, for which they created a video piece inspired by the year’s events. The project was organized by Magmart International Video Festival Director Enrico Tomiselli. Saturday’s reception will include screenings of videos addressing the first half of the century (1900-1949), and Sunday the second half will be screened. If you can’t make it out, the programs will repeat during 500x’s regular gallery hours through Novmeber 24.
