Before we get started, take a minute or two to consider Peter Simek’s always thorough recommendations in his “This Week’s Visual Art” post, in order to plan your audio/visual weekend accordingly.
And in case you missed it this morning, you should also check in on a local artist who almost never performs live, that would be Botany, who just received some kind words from The Fader earlier this week. In the post it’s revealed that there is some vague idea of a show in the coming months. While I was interviewing the artist, he blew my mind by reminding me that the last time I saw him perform was opening for Panda Bear, two years ago. Here are some events featuring music for today and tomorrow:
WEDNESDAY
Fishboy/Human Behavior/Joey Kendall/TJ Smith (J&J’s Pizza): After seeing such a solid lineup at J&J’s last night, I would be a little apprehensive about returning to the scene of the crime for a slightly less appealing lineup.
While Fishboy is charming enough to get away with his outwardly silly pop tendencies, Joey Kendall’s former involvement in the cartoonish Mount Righteous, and TJ Smith’s work in the overwrought Parata has almost led to recommendation of an appearance by these two before a tribunal sponsored by the International Songwriters Association. They can write a memorable song, but the problem is whether or not you wish to remember. I can still hum some of the music that appears in this 2007 collection of videos from another appearance at J&J’s, and I’ve basically been annoyed about that ever since.

THURSDAY
Nervous Curtains/Hormones (The Crown and Harp): While this free event takes place downstairs, Cygnus will be performing live upstairs, as the guest for Wanz Dover’s “Stereo on Strike” weekly. In other words, I can recommend the Crown and Harp on both levels this evening. That’s not always the case. On Monday, for instance, I took a quick stroll from the second level “Cool Out” happening, only to be greeted by an acoustic duo performing “Pumped Up Kicks” on the generously open mic below. You have to start somewhere. You have to end somewhere, too. I gave them a softly muttered “That’ll do,” on my way out. I’m not sure if they heard me.
“Big Bang” (The Travis): In both concert and release news that I look forward to every year, DJ Sober’s Booty Fade project has provided a mix for this year’s Gorilla VS Bear event at the Granada on Friday. It features all of the acts performing along with a couple of bonus appearances. You can get that here.
Fish Fry Bingo (Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House): The band will perform as part of a benefit for Human Rights Initiative, and we have more info on our events page.
