Seven Joins Dallas Art Fair

For the past two years, the Dallas Art Fair has extended its reach beyond their booths of FIG during its weekend run. In 2011, they commissioned a number of artists to trick out the windows at Neiman Marcus. Last year, they partnered with the Dallas Contemporary, which curated Dallas first (and last) Dallas Biennale. This year the DAF will team with the Dallas Contemporary again to bring in the Seven Art Fair, a consortium of galleries that first banded together to infect Art Basel and also showed in conjunction with last year’s Frieze. Dallas will be the third location the gallery collective sets up shop; the Dallas Contemporary will host BravinLee Programs, Catharine Clark Gallery, Inman Gallery, Pierogi, P.P.O.W., Ronald Feldman.

Maxwell Anderson Responds to Repatriation Criticism

If you haven’t noticed, DMA director Maxwell Anderson is in a row over the repatriation of art objects. First Anderson announced that the DMA would return work to Turkey, a country that has been particularly aggressive in its efforts to claim back objects from major museums.  Then Anderson led the Association of Art Museum Directors to adopt tighter standards for acquiring ancient art. Writing in the New York Times Sunday Review, Hugh Eakin didn’t think that was such a great idea. Last week, Anderson shot back in the Dallas Morning News:

We are advocates of doing what is right, even if the law has not coerced us to do so. Competing political interests within certain nations are certainly propagandizing the issue. But such grandstanding does not relieve museums of an obligation to examine material evidence with great care — and to act responsibly and ethically in the pursuit of public trust.

A Year In Performance Art

Over on Dallas Arts Revue, JR Compton has compiled images and reflections on very long list of performances that have taken place in North Texas over the past year. It’s definitely worth checking out, if only if you want to, like me, remind yourself how much you missed.

The investment group that has bought-up a huge amount of Deep Ellum has been meeting members of the art and music communities, looking for feedback about how to go about bringing about their intended revitalization of the historic neighborhood.
