As we mentioned in this week’s spring art preview, the new art season kicks-off this weekend with a load of new openings, many centering in and around the Design District. Here are a few highlights:
“C 4” by Christine Bisetto, Colette Copeland, Clayton Hurt and Chancellor Page at 500x Gallery – January 12: 7-10 p.m. 500 Exposition Avenue, Dallas, Tx 75226.
We mentioned Colette Copeland’s video project, a six-part narrative installation piece that explores historical hangings of women, in the spring preview. This show also features three other 500x artists, including Christine Bisetto, Clayton Hurt, and Chancellor Page, with some of the work of these artists involving thematically-related ideas of ephemera, memory, time, and symbol.
“CROSS TALK” by Sterling Allen and Brad Tucker, at Circuit12 Contemporary Gallery – January 12 : 6-10 p.m. 1130 Dragon Street, #150, Dallas, Tx 75207.
Despite Texas-centric publications like Glasstire and the late-Art Lies, Texas is too large and dispersed to claim state-wide cohesion when it comes to art (or music or theater for that matter). My impression is that there is a bit more artistic circulation in the triangulated zone formed by Austin, San Antonio, and Houston, while Dallas-Fort Worth can often feel like an island floating three hours off the coast of Sixth Street.
That’s why I like the prospect of this program at Circuit 12, which will systematically try to cross-pollinate the state’s divergent scenes. And Allen and Tucker make for a good launch. The Austin-based artists form a complementary pairing, and while Allen recently showed at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts (2011), Tucker hasn’t shown in North Texas since a 2008 group show at TCU. His last solo show in the area was way back in 2000 at Angstrom Gallery.
“Doing Wrong Right” by Jennifer and Mathew Guest at Mighty Fine Arts – January 12, 6-9 p.m. 409A N. Tyler, Dallas, TX 75208.
Gallerist Steve Cruz’s eccentric taste for rich and lush outsider art can sometimes feel like just what the doctor ordered. Jennifer and Mathew Guest’s vibrant, perverse, scatological paintings possess the raw, intuitive ferocity of a highly-charged adolescent doodles, with plenty of blood and fire, curiously-imagined monsters, and gruesome and surreal mash-ups of imagery that mixes the comic, domestic, fanciful, or just plain horrifying. Bold and often hilarious, it is nice to see work that isn’t trying to trip you up, but rather leaves it all right there on the canvas.
“Surface Structures” by Gail Peter Borden, at Gallerie Urbane Dallas – January 12: 5-8:30 p.m. 2277 Monitor Street, Dallas, Tx 75207.
Gail Peter Borden, who is the Director of the Master of Architecture Program at University of Southern California, uses color, geometrics, and perspective to suggest vaguely architectural and open-ended landscapes that mix a little bit of Josef Albers, a little Giorgio de Chirico, and a little Ellsworth Kelly. These paintings are clean and formal, almost too pretty, and yet what I can’t shake is the work’s use of color to suggest light and lightness – both in terms of the seeming weight of the forms and the Marfa-like dusk that pervades each of the paintings.
“Missed Calls” by Kris Pierce at The Reading Room – January 12: 7-9 p.m. 3715 Parry Avenue, Dallas, TX 75226.
At last year’s where is the power at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, Kris Pierce installed three red phones around Fort Worth, including one in front of the gallery, which recorded and streamed the voices of whomever picked up the receivers and spoke into them. At his solo show at the Reading Room, Pierce will again play with scattered telecommunications, this time posting three separate phone numbers around Dallas. In the gallery, a computer and printer will gather the data received from those telephone numbers and print out a continuing feed of the information.
“Ex Libris” by Julie Bozzi, Vernon Fisher, Joseph Havel, Linda Ridgway, Matthew Sontheimer, Erick Swenson, and Xiaoze Xie, and “The Imaginary Life Of William Bailey” by William Bailey, at Talley Dunn Gallery – January 12 : 6-8 p.m. 5020 Tracy Street, Dallas, Tx 75205.
Talley Dunn probably has the best stable of artists in town, and this Saturday a group show called Ex Libris will feature some of the best of them. The title offers an intriguing line of continuity between the featured artists, from Matthew Sontheimer and Vernon Fisher’s text-driven drawings and paintings, to Linda Ridgway’s bronzed poetics and Erick Swenson’s literary imagination.
“New Work by Angela Kallus” at the Marty Walker Gallery – January 12: 6-8 p.m. 2135 Farrington Street, Dallas, Tx 75207.

Kallus opens her first solo show in Dallas at Marty Walker Gallery with a collection of works that include a number of her circular disk paintings–meticulous spins of ridged color that recall vinyl records and garnered the artist quite a bit of attention while still in Vegas. She will also show newer, highly wrought paintings of acrylic roses which feel like a cross between the surface of a wedding cake and a Faberge egg—part frosting, part encrusted relic detail. These rose paintings in particular are grinningly garish—saccharine, but two steps removed from actual sweetness. There’s a clever irony in them that belies the deep cut that Kallus makes into ideas of romance and femininity and their iconic visual conceits.

Hurricane Sandy pushed-back Gary Simmons FOCUS show at the Modern, which was originally planned for last fall, so now we have the treat of getting Simmons’ work concurrent to an exhibition by Yinka Shonibare. To whet your appetite, here’s an episode of Art 21 featuring Shonibare:
