It’s a busy weekend with another round of Design District openings, a number of good lectures, and a new exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art that promises to turn the museum’s galleries into your college girlfriend’s dorm room. Here are some picks:

Up until this week, the MAC’s series of panel discussions have tackled practical matters for artist (MFAs, residencies). Now they take a cut at some of the meat on the bone, that delicate dance between influence and inspiration.

Monstrous is a funny word. Maybe it promises a shock, or perhaps something frightening, or grotesque, or wretched. But from the list of artists lined up for this exhibition curated by Adam Amato, there looks both grit and grace. Will pairings disarm, dislodge, disgrace?
The Artist’s Eye: Adam Silverman at the Kimbell Art Museum – October 13: 11 a.m. 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd. Fort Worth, TX 76107.
Los Angeles-based artist Adam Silverman is back in town, now that his ceramic pieces created from excavated earth from the site of the Kimbell’s expansion have been installed alongside the museum’s 40th anniversary exhibition (you can read more about Silverman’s project here). The artist will be speaking about the project and his love for Louis Kahn’s Kimbell on Saturday.
Nasher 360: Artists, Critics, Curators with Cathrine Craft, Curator and Auther at the Nasher Sculpture Center – October 13, 1 p.m. 2001 Flora St. Dallas, TX 75201.
The Nasher’s adjunct assistant curator for research and exhibitions has a new book out entitled An Audience of Artists: Dada, Neo-Dada and the Emergence of Abstract Expressionism:
Drawing on an array of previously unpublished material, Craft reveals Neo-Dada to be a complex phenomenon arising from concerns about viewers, originality and artists’ debts to the past and one another. Tracing the activities of artists such as Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman and Jackson Pollock alongside Marcel Duchamp’s renewed embrace of Dada in the late 1940s, Craft explores the challenges facing artists trying to work in the wake of a destructive world war and the paintings, objects, writings and installations that resulted from their efforts.

Stine expresses her keen awareness of sentiment, light, and space while introducing flowers alongside her signature portraits of dogs to use brushstroke, color, and contradiction to mystify definitive answers and invoke a sardonic alter ego.

One highlight of this show, a video program curated by Ben Lima that brings together a number of artists who share the common experience of working in multiple cultural contexts and urban environments, fusing hyper-global and hyper-local sensibilities in way that seems very much at home in our increasingly urbanized planet.
“EVEN FLOW” by James Roper, Patrick Martinez and Aaron De La Cruz, at the Circuit12 Contemporary – October 13: 6-10 p.m. 1130 Dragon Street, #150, Dallas, Tx 75207.
While I wasn’t very excited about the last show at Circuit 12, the exhibit did show admirable curatorial intent, particularly in the way each artist’s work engaged with the others in the show. That kind of front-and-center dialogue is also part of the intent for EVEN FLOW, says participating artist Patrick Martinez says:
It’s sort of like speaking to a friend you’ve known for years, you can speak honestly to them, there is no filter, and everything that comes from your mouth flows like water. That’s what the title is about.
“Transitions/Displacements” by Ledelle Moe, and “Tea For The Tillerman” by Vince Jones, at the Kirk Hopper Fine Art – October 13 : 6:30-8:30 p.m. 3008 Commerce Street, Dallas, Tx 75226.
I’m very intrigued by the images of Ledelle Moe’s haunting, concrete funerary sculptures, which seem simultaneously monumental and deferential. If you have an extra hour or so, here’s the artist lecturing at Boston University. The intro to the video offers some quick background on Moe, but definitely watch through to where she describes her work with the Flat Gallery, an “off-the-cuff” conceptual/performance space she started with friends while an undergraduate in Durban, South Africa:
“Architect: A Chamber Opera” Film screening at the Kimbell Art Museum – October 14, 2:30 p.m. 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd. Fort Worth, TX 76107.
An opera about architecture, with a mashup of created and found sounds. This film sounds a little effusive, but I’m certainly intrigued. From the write-up:
Inspired by the iconic buildings and life story of architect Louis I. Kahn (1901–74), this recently released operatic production is a meditation on creativity and the inner life of the creator. It combines an original libretto (Jenny Kallick), electroacoustic music interwoven with captured “architectural” sounds (Kallick and John Downey), instrumental and vocal music (Lewis Spratlan), and a video comprised of photographs of Rome and Kahn’s architecture along with watercolors inspired by the architect’s buildings.
