According to Gorilla vs. Bear, the ever-popular ex-Dallasite St. Vincent will be releasing her next album September 13th, again on 4AD. We told you about her impressive Big Black covers last week, and Steve Albini himself weighed in on his studio’s long-running Electrical Audio Forum, in response to the video:
That was pretty good. There are a couple of small details about the drumming that impressed me, and I like how the drummer didn’t break character. A fine version.
He continues, in response to a video of an Austin City Limits performance featuring original Annie Clark material rather than something he wrote:
That’s pretty good. A little loft-y/Montrealish for me with touches of music school, but I like it way better than what I would imagine if you had just said, “let me play this Austin City Limits clip.”
Starting to think she’s pretty good actually.
I’ll stop short of calling Albini “acerbic” or “caustic” or anything else writers use when describing him, but let’s just say, he is very honest and it’s always appreciated. This all a great excuse to post an extended clip that includes the other Big Black song that St. Vincent covered, “Bad Penny.” Note: Careful if you’re at work. Includes significant but entertaining profanity:
