Yes, this weekend you may be running around to galleries, or hunkered down at TEDxSMU, or watching Casablanca, or taking part in any of the myriad of things happening during this busy fall weekend. But you should make an effort catch a new adaptation of Q-Roc’s “the bull-jean stories,” which is being performed at the South Dallas Cultural Center through the weekend. A co-commission with Houston’s Diverseworks Art Space and supported by a National Performance Network Creation Fund grant, the performance is an adaptation of Sharon Bridgforth’s book, but performer/filmmaker Q-Roc incorporates documentary, visual art, and performance elements to create a mash-up of traditional and non-traditional storytelling techniques. The South Dallas Cultural Center will present an original performance work co-commissioned with Houston’s premier artspace, Diverseworks and supported by a National Performance Network Creation Fund grant. the bull-jean stories multimedia adaptation is a one woman show performed by Q-Roc Ragsdale and adapted from award-winning author, Sharon Bridgforth’s book, “the bull-jean stories”. This exciting work uses traditional storytelling and non-traditional verse to chronicle the course of love returning in the lifetime of bull-dog-jean, a woman-loving-woman.
As a filmmaker/performer, Q aka Q-Roc, weaves filmed stories and documentary interviews with live performance and visual art, giving this multimedia adaptation a richly textured series of narratives that speak to several generations of masculine of center women (bull-jeans). The bull jeans stories multimedia adaptation takes place in the rural South of the 1930s and it comes alive in an intimate performance environment with a backdrop of visual art by one of Houston’s hottest artists, Lovie Olivia.
