What To Do in Dallas This Weekend

Here’s our State of the Union: thank god it’s the weekend. We’ve got the Globetrotters, a new exhibit at the Nasher, and a DJ Battle on our calendar.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28

Nightlife // Alice in Auraland
Tonight, Aura becomes Wonderland. Here’s why you want to go: Ladies get free drinks from 9-11 pm. Guys, you get to gawk at girls in bunny costumes and sexy Alice outfits. DJ Timbo will be there, along with a special guest DJ—an added bonus for everyone. 9 pm. Call for tables: 214-762-2872.

Nightlife // Battle of the DJs at Deux
Tonight, it’s the battle of the beats (hi, Snookie!) at Deux between DJs Savage and Pollux. The two spin side-by-side, going back and forth all night. The winner is determined by applause and whoever can get the most peeps on the dance floor. Spin-off starts at 10 pm. Drinks are half-price before midnight.

Nightlife // Ladies’ Night at Four Lounge
Every Thursday night at Four Lounge, it’s free bubbly for the ladies. You and your group of gal pals get a bottle of champagne on the house. 9 pm–midnight. Must RSVP: 214-998-7508.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 29

Theater and Dance // The 39 Steps
This Alfred Hitchcock comedy already has us interested; apparently, four
cast members play more than 100 characters. We’re going just to
see how they change costumes so quickly. The story revolves
around a man who goes out for a night at the theater and ends up
meeting a woman who claims to be a spy. When she dies at his house, he
has to flee London, and drama ensues. 8 pm. The Majestic Theatre.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 30

Museums and Galleries // Jaume Plensa: Genus and Species
If you’ve been to Chicago in the past couple of years, you’ve probably seen the Crown Fountain, a giant two-sided
video display that features the faces of Chicago residents (not to
mention a cooling stream of water). It’s a striking piece of artwork,
and the sculptor, Spaniard Jaume Plensa, is the focus of the newest
exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Plensa has created nine
sculptures specifically for us, and they are on display both inside
and outside the building. Take that, Chicago. Through May 2.

Sports // The Harlem Globetrotters
Though we wouldn’t trade Dirk Nowitzki for these athletic geniuses, we
do like the way they move on the court. (And we like to see their sexy
legs in shorts.) These tree-tall dribblers are making the rounds on
their 2010 World Tour, with a stop for two shows at the American Airlines Center. In
anticipation, we’re practicing our fancy footwork and learning to spin
a ball on the tip of our finger. 11 am & 2:30 pm. www.harlemglobetrotters.com.

Sports // Big D Climb
We are not very good at climbing stairs. We often fall going up, which
is awkward and embarrassing. We’re sure you are very graceful on the
steps, though, which is why you should sign up for the Big D Climb.
Benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, this event forces
participants to climb up 52 flights (1,040 steps) to the top of the
Fountain Place building downtown. The fastest climbers get a reward,
but everyone gets sore legs for a week. At least it’s for a good cause.
Jan 30, 8 am. Fountain Place, 1445 Ross Ave. 972-996-5913. leukemia-lymphoma.org.

Nightlife // Helloooooo.com & Lift Lounge Present DJ Marshall Barnes
The LA-based DJ has spun alongside some big names, including DJ AM and Steve Aoki, so you know he’s gotta be good. Check him out this Saturday night at the new-and-improved LIFT Lounge. 10 pm.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 31

Nightlife // Sunday Social Club at Lotus
Kick off your week—or end your weekend—at Lotus, with beats by Best DJ in Dallas finalist DJ Avi and $5 cocktails all night long. Feeling VIP? Reserve a table with bottle service for only $150. Call: 214-298-3836.

Food and Wine // Gumbo Challenge at Rex’s Seafood Market
We love a good food-based challenge, especially when Bobby Flay or that guy from the Man Vs. Food show
is there. But we’ll settle for eating plenty of delicious gumbo at the
second annual Gumbo Challenge and Rex’s Seafood Market. Contestants
must let alert Rex’s beforehand, and they should bring their hot
gumbo at 2 pm. Guests can sample all the different dishes and help pick
the winner. Food and drinks are served. 3–6 pm. Rex’s Seafood Market, 5200 W. Lovers Ln. 214-351-6363.
