Nightlife, Food and Wine // Texas Night at Abacus
These days, everyone is talking about “local.” We like Kent Rathbun’s style–he’s making drinks part of the movement, too. The bartenders at Abacus are pouring cocktails made with Texas liquor tonight, so we can indulge in plenty of Dripping Springs Vodka, Paula’s Flavored Liquors, Republic of Texas tequila, and more. Hors d’oeuvre are free, which only sweetens the deal. Here‘s hoping for a lobster shooter or two. 7–9 pm.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26
Happenings, Food and Wine // Fireside Wine Flights at the Dallas Arboretum
When the weather is chilly, there’s nothing we want to do more than drink wine by the fire. Unfortunately, the last time we lit one up in our house, we ended up with a visit from the Dallas Fire Department (which wasn’t too terrible, mind you). This time we are going to head to the Dallas Arboretum for Fireside Wine Flights in the DeGolyar House. For less than $40, you get wine and delicious snacks (think mini beef Wellington and mini baked Brie), all in the beautiful DeGolyer Garden Cafe. We’re thinking of calling those firefighters and having them meet us there. 3:30–5 pm.
Nightlife // O.E. Penguin Grand Opening Weekend
We already like this bar, and we haven’t even been yet. O.E. stands for “One-Eyed,” and the bar stocks a one-eyed penguin suit that you can wear when you‘re there. (Note: must bring camera.) There are darts and shuffleboard (yes and yes), plenty of rum punch, bar food, a game room, and more. Stop by and welcome these birds to town. 5 pm–2 am. OE Penguin, 1404 1/2 Main St.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27
Weddings // D Weddings Luncheon and Bridal Soiree
Brides-to-be are lucky, and not just because they don’t have to scour the Internet for dates anymore. They get to attend the D Weddings Luncheon and Bridal Soiree at The Joule. Guests enjoy a yummy lunch catered by Charlie Palmer while learning about local vendors such as Ducky Bob's, Neiman Marcus Downtown Bridal Salon, and Jordan Payne Events. $45. Noon. Black and Gold Ballroom and Penthouse. RSVP: firstname.lastname@example.org or 214-261-4503.
Theater and Dance // Amour
We don’t know that much about burlesque, but what we do know, we like. No. 1: Dita von Teese does it, and she is probably the most gorgeous woman alive. No. 2: we think our man will like it, but not in a sleazy way. No. 3: all body types are featured, so we won’t feel like we need to call Jenny Craig immediately after the show. The performance, sponsored by local Pin Curl Magazine, is called “Amour” and features local performers such as Miss Malicious, Ginger Valentine, and Perle Noire (recently crowned Queen of Burlesque). Emcee Justin Foster, seen on Last Comic Standing, should keep us laughing. Lakewood Theater, 8 pm. ticketmaster.com.
Nightlife // Support Haiti Benefit
Support the American Red Cross relief effort in Haiti at The Fish this weekend. A $10 donation gets you bottomless sake, and DJs keep you moving. Bottoms up. 5–8 pm.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28
Museums and Galleries // Sundays with Andy
Spend the afternoon learning about Andy Warhol’s last decade at the Fort Worth Modern. This week, artist Michael Corris takes you around the special exhibition Andy Warhol: the Last Decade. Free with price of admission. 1 pm.
Galas and Benefits, Food and Wine // Les Dames d’Escoffier Raiser Grazer
Support the cutting-edge females of the food, fine beverage, and hospitality industries at the 21st annual Raiser Grazer. In addition to a wine tasting, 20 female chefs from restaurants such as York Street and La Duni offer samples of their food. Make a bid at the silent auction for culinary classes, private dinners, wines, and more. Proceeds benefit Les Dames d’Escoffier Dallas chapter’s scholarship programs at five colleges in Texas for women in the food, wine, and hospitality industries. F.I.G. 6–9 pm.
