The No-Frills Beach Babe
With a devotion to tried-and-true products, handmade body scrubs, and the occasional splurge, Katie James, the Dallas-based partner at Beach House Surf Shops in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, and mom of 2-year-old Luca and 5-month-old Olivia, keeps her beauty routine as laid back as the surfers she outfits.
Diet
Breakfast: “I typically have a grapefruit topped with honey or oatmeal with Luca and, of course, a cup or two of coffee.”
Snacks: “I like to bring home different kinds of seasonal fruits to snack on.”
Lunch: “I try to stick to the same routine. I shop once a week. If we go out, it’s Bread Winners or La Duni at NorthPark, so the kids can run around on the grass.”
Dinner: “I spend about an hour cooking and playing with the kids, and then [my husband] comes home, and we all sit down and eat over a glass of wine or a beer. My go-to is a salmon recipe that I cook with maple syrup, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.”
Beverages: “I have coffee every morning. I also make a ginger-peach tea a lot.”
Indulgent foods: “Shaved ice from TC Shaved Ice. And red wine.”
Fitness
“My kids are my fitness for now. From the second I wake up until my kids are in bed, I’m running around with them.”
Skin Care
“My skin care is simple. I use Aveeno Skin brightening daily scrub every morning, followed by oil of Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with SPF. Once a week, I’ll mix a little sugar with water for a deeper exfoliation.”
Makeup
“I keep my look as natural as possible. I use a Your Name Mineral Powder Foundation, which I get at Osgood O’Neil. I like Bobbi Brown blush in almond and L’Oreal Telescopic mascara. I have started branching out with my lipstick, doing bright corals and reds or a light pink. I like Revlon Super Lustrous lipsticks. If I’m going out at night, I’ll do eyelashes and a sexy lip.”
Hair
“My good friend Elaine Nguyen actually comes to my house to do my hair. She used to be at Osgood O’Neil, but now she does house calls. I’m a huge fan of Kérastase, and I use the Volume Active Shampoo and the Lait Vital Conditioner. For hairspray, I like Tresemmé. I also love Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.”
Body
“I make a white sugar, coconut oil, and lavender essential oil body scrub that I use once a week. I’m in love with lavender fragrance. One of my favorite products is the Versa Spa Sunless Pro Tanning Bronzer 360° Spray from Palm Beach. It’s a perfect tan for me. I get my eyebrows threaded at Wink, and I get a massage when I can at the Ritz. I do a mani/pedi at home when the kids are napping. I love red on my nails and toes. Essie’s Fifth Avenue is my go-to shade. One of my favorite products is Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat; nails dry in two minutes. My fragrance is Tom Ford Black Orchid, but I recently picked up Wyndmere geranium essential oil from Central Market. It smells amazing and lasts all day.”
