Restaurant Review: Mi Dia From Scratch

A revisit to the satisfying Tex-Mex restaurant in Grapevine.

The menu offers a variety of Tex-Mex, Santa Fe-style, and regional Mexican dishes, which is satisfying if you have a large party of picky eaters. Kids can feast on street tacos, and adventurous gourmands can find pleasure in an ambitious plate of roasted duck served with an intricate mole. There is a simple skirt steak grilled over pecan wood for eaters stuck in steak-and-potato syndrome. The restaurant is always packed, and the bar is often three deep. Despite the crowds, the service is usually polite and efficient. On my last trip, however, we experienced a few mishaps. It took 15 minutes for cocktails to arrive, and when they did, it turned out they were intended for the table next to ours. They were finally delivered with the food, which is not the worst thing if you are in a hurry, but I’d brought an out-of-town guest to catch up with old friends. One, who is allergic to onions, ordered her tacos pastor without onions, but the dish arrived with them sprinkled across the top.My favorite dish—the stacked enchiladas covered with cheesy red and green chile sauces and topped with a fried egg—was, as usual, hot and satisfying. Two orders of hot sopapillas disappeared within minutes. It gave us time to order another round of drinks and enjoy a night on the patio.
