The newest neighbor in the Bishop Arts District, home store and design studio Neighborhood, grew out of Erin and John Paul Hossley’s belief that good design should be easy, accessible, and fun.

The husband and wife—he an architect, she an interior designer—filled the shop with a carefully culled selection of modern-leaning furniture, accessories, books, and art. Eames chairs sit comfortably alongside whimsical kitchen goods and obscure coffee table books. Works by local artists Cabe Booth, Ty Wilcox, and David Anthony Harman line the walls. And reclaimed lumber and steel tables by Stash Design (the firm responsible for the hip interiors of Oak Cliff hot spots Oddfellows, Eno’s, and Chicken Scratch) round out the mix.

On the studio side, a tidy row of bar stools beckons clients to sidle up to the Design Bar for some free advice. Services include, among others, paint or textile consultations ($50 an hour) and the creation of construction documents ($100 an hour), and all prices are listed on the Design Bar menu.

Neighborhood’s unconventional hours add to the approachable atmosphere. Open until 8 pm Tuesday through Thursday and 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, the store makes it easy to duck into Eno’s for a Local Pie and a Fireman’s No. 4 before walking next door to embark on a full-scale house remodel. We’ll drink to that. 411 N. Bishop Ave. 214-943-5650.
